Mr. Speaker, I am presenting a petition which calls upon Parliament to take all necessary steps to preserve the definition of marriage as one man and one woman with the exclusion of all others. I hope the present government listens to it.

Mr. Speaker, I have a petition with regard to the availability of library print materials for people with disabilities. The petitioners call upon the Government of Canada to support the production of alternative format library materials for print disability Canadians, including persons who are blind, visually impaired and/or deaf and blind. I submit this to the House.

Mr. Speaker, the second petition I present calls on the Government of Canada to have provision of affordable disability supports such as an adaptive devices program for all Canadians who are blind, visually impaired and/or deaf and blind.

Mr. Speaker, I have two petitions. The first petition calls upon Parliament to take whatever steps are necessary and required to preserve marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others.
Student Loans March 29th, 2004
Mr. Speaker, the recent budget did not fully address all issues affecting post-secondary student loans.
The budget failed to eliminate parental income from the formula used to determine the amount of the loan. The budget also has failed to allow living expenses incurred by students who work away from home during the pre-study period as a deduction from pre-study period income. Both of these failures reduce the maximum amount of loans students are eligible to receive.
Furthermore, the budget has not provided assistance to those students whose loans are defaulted and placed with a collection agency. Students are hounded and harassed by collection agencies in a very unprofessional manner.
Student groups have indicated that the government has failed to address all concerns regarding student loan issues. When will the government get it right?
Atlantic Canada February 27th, 2004
Mr. Speaker, the government now has an opportunity to put things right for Atlantic Canadians.
The government could change the equalization formula and eliminate the clawback on revenue from natural resources. This would give the provinces more revenues to improve health care, education and create much needed employment.
Is the government willing to change the equalization formula and eliminate the clawback on revenue from resources for provinces like Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador?
Atlantic Canada February 27th, 2004
Mr. Speaker, the government's track record in its treatment of Atlantic Canada is very poor. The government has made drastic cuts to transfer payments to the provinces, and this has adversely affected the quality of health care and education for Atlantic Canadians.
Also, Newfoundland and Labrador is the only province without a fixed link to the rest of Canada, yet the government has squandered taxpayer dollars through the HRDC fiasco, ineffective gun registry and now the sponsorship program scandal.
When will the government treat Atlantic Canadians properly?

Mr. Speaker, this is not a new government and it has no vision.
As a minister of this government, the Prime Minister has allowed $1 billion of taxpayers' money to be wasted through the HRDC department, $2 billion to be thrown away on a controversial gun registry program, and now, $250 million to be squandered through the sponsorship program.
All this while rural Canada suffers.
This may be his vision for Canada, but it is not the vision of the people of Gander—Grand Falls.
The weather station is important to Gander and coastal regions of Newfoundland and Labrador. Not only is this service vital but so are the jobs that will be lost. Why did this government permit the downgrading of this important service without an impact study?
As I said before in the House, is there a conflict of interest for the CEO of Pelmorex Communications, who is a member of the advisory board to the Meteorological Service of Canada, which owns and operates the broadcasting licence for the weather network?
