Interparliamentary Delegations April 5th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, on behalf of the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, I am pleased to present, in both official languages, the report of the January 2000 parliamentary delegation to Taiwan.

As the Chair of the delegation, I am pleased to report on this very successful all party delegation that concentrated on bilateral agricultural issues.

Specifically, I had an audience with President Lee and other officials and had discussions on Taiwan's anticipated ascent into the WTO. The delegation drew attention to the importance of the agriculture sector to an overall bilateral relationship.

The delegation requested that there be a renewal of the quotas for meat products which came to an end in December 1999. It visited research and production facilities.

A copy of the report has been circulated to all parliamentarians. I thank members of the delegation for their constructive participation.

Mr. Speaker, we know that the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food has been engaged in two days of intense negotiations with his provincial counterparts, working to reach a final agreement on a long term safety net program for all Canadian farmers.

Can the parliamentary secretary inform the House of any progress being made toward the objective of a national, effective and equitable safety net system that all farmers so desperately need?

Agriculture March 16th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, every year the world celebrates International Women's Day. This year was no exception, and at this time I would like to draw attention to the vital roles women play in our rural communities and the contributions they make to the agriculture industry in Canada.

Farm women are integral to the success of the country's agriculture and agri-food industry. In addition, through their volunteer work and their community leadership rural women play an important role in strengthening their communities.

These women have helped to make the agriculture industry the success that it is today. They will have a hand in shaping the future and making this industry and their communities better places in which to live and work. I applaud them for their contributions.

Farm Safety March 13th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, with National Farm Safety Week about to end, let us resolve to reduce farm related injuries throughout the year.

Farming is a way of life for over 200,000 farm families from coast to coast to coast. It is also a profession with one of the highest risks of on the job injury and death. Close to 700 Canadians died of farm related injuries between 1990 and 1996. Most of these could have been prevented. Working with tractors and other self-propelled equipment remains the leading cause of death and injury with rollovers and runovers a serious concern.

Agriculture Canada and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture along with other farm safety groups are urging farmers to equip their tractors with rollover protection structures and seatbelts. That is what National Farm Safety Week is all about, getting farmers and their families thinking about how they can protect themselves from what are often needless injuries on their farms.

Petitions March 2nd, 2000

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 36, I am honoured to present this petition signed by hundreds of residents in Lambton county in my riding of Lambton—Kent—Middlesex. They urge the government to protest the actions of the Taliban in Afghanistan with women's rights now non-existent for work, education, health care and freedom of movement.

The Budget February 29th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, I can assure my colleague that in Lambton—Kent—Middlesex the reduction in income tax was certainly well received.

I received calls today in my riding office complimenting the Minister of Finance once again on the direction he has taken with the budget. I think that was reflected in question period today when our hon. finance minister did not have to stand often. Obviously the opposition did not have many questions to ask, and that is reflective of a good budget.

A motion to adjourn the House under Standing Order 38 deemed to have been moved.
