Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 36, I am honoured to present a petition signed by residents of Grand Bend, London and Dashwood who urge parliament to ban the gas additive MMT. The petitioners note that studies under way at the University of Quebec show that MMT has adverse health effects, especially on children and seniors. They also note that car manufacturers oppose the use of MMT.

Agriculture April 19th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Today in Ottawa agri-food leaders are delivering their vision regarding the crucial next round of WTO negotiations. Can the parliamentary secretary assure Canadians the government will fight to protect our farmers and ensure the views of this industry will be part of the negotiations?

Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month April 14th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, April has been designated Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month to highlight one of the most common neurological disorders.

The disease is a chronic brain disorder resulting in tremors, slow movements and muscle stiffness. It affects over 100,000 Canadians, most over the age of 55.

The Parkinson Foundation of Canada, established in 1955, consists of more than 100 chapters and support groups nationwide. The foundation's activities are committed to funding, research, seeking treatments, and eventually finding a cure for Parkinson's disease.

The foundation provides training, counselling and workshops for patients, caregivers and health care providers, while developing educational material to heighten public awareness about Parkinson's.

I invite the House to join with me in wishing the Parkinson Foundation of Canada and its volunteers a very successful Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month.

Farming March 15th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, farming is a way of life for over 200,000 Canadian farm families from coast to coast. Too often, however, it is also a way of injury and death. Six hundred and ninety-seven Canadians died in farm related accidents between 1990 and 1996. Most of these deaths could have been prevented.

During National Farm Safety Week, March 10 to 17, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, together with corporate partner, John Deere Limited, are urging farmers and their families to think about how they can protect themselves from the possible hazards of living and working on a farm.

Lambton Farm Safety Day is held every summer in my riding to teach children some of the safety concerns on the farm. I congratulate the organizers of this well attended program. This year's national theme of “Safe Farming is Smart Farming” highlights the need for everyone involved in agriculture to promote safety awareness and to follow safe practices.

Nato March 11th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, tomorrow, March 12, the foreign ministers of Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic will deposit the official ratification documents to become full-fledged members of NATO.

I spoke in support of this matter two years ago to the day. Canada's leading role helped make this day a reality.

It will mean more stability in Europe and more security for Canadian soldiers in the region. It will mean strengthened links between Canadians of Hungarian, Polish and Czech origins.

These communities consider NATO enlargement as the ultimate guarantee for democracy, freedom and stability in their native countries.

As a member of parliament of Hungarian heritage, I was proud to meet last week with Mr. Sandor Papp, Hungary's ambassador to Canada. Mr. Papp conveyed that next year Hungary celebrates its 1,000 birthday as a state.

Tomorrow we gain new partners in NATO with shared principles of freedom and democracy.

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 36 I am honoured to present two petitions signed by residents of the Windsor and Grand Bend area.
