Statements in the House

Petitions April 26th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 36, it is indeed my pleasure to rise to present a petition signed by over 8,000 residents of Sault Ste. Marie and the greater Algoma district.

The petitioners observe that a recent ruling of the B.C. supreme court has for all intents and purposes legalized the possession of child pornography. The petitioners ask parliament to acknowledge that child pornography is a threat to common Canadian values and they call upon parliament to examine ways to eliminate child pornography in Canada.

Wayne Gretzky April 19th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, Wayne Gretzky's retirement leads many Canadians to recall with fondness No. 99's glory days with the Oilers.

However, for people in Sault Ste. Marie the wonderful memories go back even further, to the year when Gretzky dominated the Ontario Hockey League and gave us the first glimpses of his greatness.

Drafted third overall by the Sault Greyhounds in the 1977 Ontario Hockey League draft, 16 year old Wayne Gretzky went on to have a phenomenal 1977-78 season. He dazzled fans with 70 goals and 112 assists in only 64 games. Regretfully, Saultites watched him move on the following year to the World Hockey Association.

To honour Gretzky's outstanding contribution to the Greyhounds and to the OHL, the great one's No. 99 hangs in the rafters of the Sault's Memorial Gardens.

Only now do we realize how lucky we as Saultites were to have seen Gretzky's magic develop before our eyes. Sault Ste. Marie will be eternally grateful for that one unforgettable season that started our love affair with Canada's most famous son.

National Revenue March 4th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of National Revenue.

Revenue Canada made a preliminary decision yesterday that France, Romania, the Russian Federation and the Slovak Republic were dumping steel products into Canada.

Why was this decision made, and what does it mean to Algoma Steel and other Canadian steel producers?

Natural Resources February 18th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Natural Resources.

In his ground breaking budget on Tuesday, the Minister of Finance outlined an initiative called GeoConnexions, an attempt to make geographic information more broadly available and useful to Canadians through the information highway.

Could the minister tell me how this initiative might benefit people in my riding of Sault Ste. Marie and Canadians in other parts of the country?

Petitions February 3rd, 1999

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 36, I rise to present a petition signed by over 250 people in my riding of Sault Ste. Marie.

The petitioners ask parliament to respect and adhere to their views that only the union of a single male and a single female constitutes marriage.

To this end the petitioners request that parliament enact Bill C-225, an act to amend the Marriage and Prohibitive Degrees Act and the Interpretation Act.

Committees Of The House December 10th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the 8th report of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.

In accordance with Standing Order 108(2), the committee undertook a study of fisheries issues in Prince Edward Island. The committee requests a comprehensive response to this report pursuant to Standing Order 109.

Steel Industry December 7th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, Revenue Canada announced last Thursday that it has commenced an investigation of the dumping of foreign steel into Canada.

Will the Minister of National Revenue now assure Algoma Steel, all Canadian steel producers and Canadians living in cities like Sault Ste. Marie which are dependent on the steel industry that his department will complete this investigation without delay?

Violence Against Women December 1st, 1998

Mr. Speaker, violence against women is a national problem that demands the attention of all Canadians.

On December 6, 1989, 14 young women were savagely murdered at the École Polytechnique in Montreal. To commemorate the deaths of these women, the Government of Canada established December 6 as a national day of remembrance and action on violence against women.

Nine years after this horrible event I join men and women across the country in remembering those who have been injured or killed and in thanking community groups that help abused women on a daily basis.

This important work is done in my riding of Sault Ste. Marie by Algoma Women's Sexual Assault Services, Women in Crisis, the Sexual Assault Care Centre, Breton House and the Phoenix Rising Women's Centre. Like their counterparts across the country these groups are putting remembrance into action.

Let us all do our best to follow their example. Let us all do our best to put an end to violence against women.

National Revenue November 6th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of National Revenue.

The Department of National Revenue recently held consultations on ways to improve its fairness to Canadians.

Would the parliamentary secretary tell us how the government plans to ensure that the fairness initiative meets the needs of Canadian taxpayers?

Environment October 21st, 1998

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Natural Resources.

Federal, provincial and territorial ministers of energy and the environment have just finished two days of meetings in Halifax.

Would the minister tell the House what progress has been made to enable Canada to meet its Kyoto commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions?
