Statements in the House

Supply June 3rd, 1999

You are talking about 38%. State the facts.

Supply June 3rd, 1999

What kind of votes did I get?

Supply June 3rd, 1999

Madam Speaker, I withdraw my comments.

Supply June 3rd, 1999

You are racist. You know you are.

Supply June 3rd, 1999

Because they are racist.

Liberal Party Of Canada June 1st, 1999

Mr. Speaker, a recent poll conducted by Ekos Research found that 57% of Canadians would vote Liberal. This support was found right across Canada, which has Liberal support at 58% in British Columbia, 60% in Atlantic Canada, 65% in Ontario and 54% in Quebec.

It comes as no great surprise to me that the Reform Party is losing its support across Canada including in western Canada. With my 26 years in politics I saw it coming.

I have some advice for the Reform Party: do not desert the sinking ship; sell it.

Western Task Force May 27th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I rise to take strong exception to the ridiculous remarks directed to me yesterday in the House by a member of the Reform Party. The member criticized myself and the Prime Minister's western task force that visited British Columbia and referred to me as a task force yesman.

During the task force's tour of B.C., we received almost 100 presentations from a wide variety of community groups and organizations. If listening to the concerns of these groups is being a yesman then I plead guilty.

Instead of criticizing my efforts, the members of the Reform Party should spend more time in their ridings so I do not get so many calls from different mayors and council members from their ridings to say yes again so I can help them again.

The Late Bill Stewart May 26th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, it is with profound regret that I rise to acknowledge the sudden passing of a city councillor who served two British Columbia communities.

Bill Stewart served the city of Port Coquitlam as an alderman from 1983 to 1994. Having moved to the East Kootenays to pursue a new career opportunity, he was elected in 1996 to serve in the city of Kimberley as a city councillor.

Bill Stewart died suddenly in hospital on Sunday, May 16. He is survived by his wife, Alma, a son and a daughter. Bill Stewart served the public well. He will be missed.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police May 13th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, once again the Reformer on the opposite side has his facts all wrong.

This week the member for Dewdney—Alouette incorrectly stated that I asked for an audit of the RCMP. That is hogwash.

The fact is that it was the mayors of the greater Vancouver regional district who requested the audit.

I have a suggestion for the member for Dewdney—Alouette. He should form a new party that is neither Reform nor the united alternative. He should be the founding member of the huff and puff party.

Reform Party Of Canada May 11th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I get an awful lot of calls from people in communities, municipalities and cities all over British Columbia represented by MPs from the Reform Party inquiring about grants and many things that are happening in Ottawa.

The ridings of Fort Nelson, Smithers, Prince George, Midway, Cranbrook, Kelowna, New Westminster and Maple Ridge are represented by Reform Party MPs. That can only mean one thing, that Reformers are not doing anything in their ridings. They are here full of hot air. On the streets they are full of hot air and nothing else.
