Statements in the House

Prime Minister April 24th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, at the rate at which false accusations are being made and being refuted, there is soon to be nobody left on the front bench to ask questions about at all.

This document is a forged document. It has been turned over to the RCMP. The RCMP is doing its job. Members would be wise to respect the process and allow the police to complete its investigations.

Prime Minister April 23rd, 2001

Mr. Speaker, if the member opposite will ask the Leader of the Opposition to lend me his shoe phone I will call right away.

Prime Minister April 23rd, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I am not prepared to answer today. I have just come back; it is my first day at work.

I want to report to the member that there are crocuses on Parliament Hill, the snow has melted and Canadians are really very tired of these questions.

Business Development Bank Of Canada April 23rd, 2001

Mr. Speaker, as I understand it, the documents were provided to a national newspaper, the National Post . The National Post attempted to contact both the PMO, and I suspect the BDC. The National Post sent a copy of the documents to the PMO, so the PMO received them from the national newspaper, looked at them and said “These are false. This is a forgery”.

That information was communicated back to the newspaper, communicated to the BDC which, determining these were forged documents, called in the RCMP. I am glad the member has acknowledged that these documents were forged and I assume is happy that the RCMP will find out who did it.

Business Development Bank Of Canada April 23rd, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I know members opposite would share my concern, and indeed the concern of members on this side of the House, that BDC documents were forged, that false information was put on those documents, and that those documents were attempted to be distributed.

When that information was brought to the attention of BDC, BDC called in the RCMP and the RCMP is now dealing with the matter.

Health April 6th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, as the hon. member will know, we recently announced funding for five regional centres for genome research in Canada. As part and parcel of the first funding announcement of $136 million, each centre and each project selected, some 22 across the country, have funds put in place for proper analysis of the legal and ethical questions and, of course, the question of Canadian values associated with this research.

In addition to that, CIHR is giving government advice on this issue. The Canadian biotechnology advisory committee is giving advice—

Shipbuilding Industry April 5th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, that is not what I said, but I can think of a good use for some metal plates and whose ankles they should be tied to.

A federal government appointed task force has just reported today. The members of the task force have done an excellent job in providing a tool kit with a wide variety of options open to us to improve the quality and productivity of our shipbuilding industry. We will carefully analyze that report and report back to the House at the appropriate time.

Shipbuilding Industry April 5th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the Alliance Party may be over there talking about providing huge subsidies for the shipbuilding industry, but we think the shipbuilding industry is capable of being innovative, using new technologies, using training and using access to the marketplace to carve out a niche that will be successful for Canadian workers.

We do not have the defeatist attitude of members of the Alliance Party who think we can only do business with subsidies. We are not of that view.

Prime Minister April 5th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, today at the Museum of Civilization an expedition has been mounted. It is a very important one. It covers the fishery of Canada. A particular segment of it has been dedicated to the greatest fishing expedition ever in the history of this country that turned up nothing. It is dedicated to the Leader of the Official Opposition.

Prime Minister April 5th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I would be very happy to look into the question that has been raised and report back to the House at the first opportunity.

Let me say to the member opposite that everybody in Canada is waiting for the Leader of the Opposition and for the foreign affairs critic to issue an apology for comparing the Prime Minister of Canada to the butcher of the Balkans. This is lower than low. It demands an apology and it should be issued without delay.
