Statements in the House

Criminal Code March 26th, 1996

You will never learn.

Taiwan March 25th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Given the outcome of Saturday's presidential election in Taiwan, the first direct democratic election in that nation's 5000 year history, can the minister indicate to the House any foreign policy implications for Canada in southeast Asia?

Tobacco Advertising March 19th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Health.

Over 40,000 Canadians die each year as a direct result of tobacco related diseases. The recent advertising campaign by tobacco manufacturers was obviously targeted at teenagers and school children.

Can the Minister of Health inform the House of the government's strategy to eliminate the threat to Canadian youth that tobacco advertising poses?

The Budget March 18th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, now I can complete the question which I tried to ask earlier when I was cut off because of time constraints.

On page 29 of today's Quorum there is an article entitled "View from the West" which states that Michael Walker, boss of the Fraser Institute and the chief guru of the Conservative movement on economic matters says that he was frankly impressed and reassured by the finance minister's budget. "Far from being a do-nothing budget, it is probably the most significant budget produced by the federal government in the late 20th century".

Among other things he said that it showed the government is on track to reduce the deficit to zero by the end of the decade. It showed that federal spending cuts were actually more severe than those of the Klein government in Alberta. It showed that Canada was borrowing less than any other G-7 country.

That third point is very important. I hope the hon. member will compare his notes with this article and tell us where he stands on the issue.

The Budget March 18th, 1996

Mr. Speaker I refer the hon. member to the Financial Post column View from the West. The headline reads: ``Reform Party soon won't have a platform to stand on''. The Reform Party soon will not have a leg to stand on, or perhaps the Reform Party soon will not have a chair to sit on. Michael Walker, the boss of the Fraser Institute says-

Canada-United States Twinning Program March 13th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to familiarize the House with my idea to twin Canadian ridings with United States congressional districts.

Twinning Canadian ridings with United States congressional districts would encourage the exchange of ideas and build channels of communication between Canadian and U.S. legislators. The twinning program would provide opportunities for politicians on both sides to gain a better understanding of the problems facing both nations.

One critical aspect of the twinning program is the initial twinning process. I hope to elicit the support of my fellow members of Parliament in determining the possible twinnings. I would greatly appreciate their assistance with this process.

Pleasant View Junior High School February 28th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, on February 14, 1996 Pleasant View Junior High School in my riding of Don Valley North held a special Canadian citizenship week to celebrate National Citizenship Week and mark the 25th anniversary of the school.

I salute Pleasant View Junior High on its silver anniversary and commend the principal, staff and students in choosing the symbol of reaffirmation of their Canadian citizenship as a meaningful way to celebrate this significant milestone in Pleasant View's history.

Congratulations Pleasant View junior high school and happy 25th anniversary.

Armenia December 11th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the seventh anniversary of the terrible tragedy of the Armenian earthquake.

On December 7, 1988 nature unleashed its fury and hundreds of thousands of lives were changed forever by this tragic event. The magnitude of this natural disaster is almost unimaginable. The death toll has never been firmly established, but estimates range upward of 100,000 deaths and over 500,000 additional people injured.

In response to the tragedy the Government of Canada provided over $6 million in aid to Armenia through the Red Cross and Canadians from all regions of our nation donated an additional $2.5 million in humanitarian relief.

When I was in Armenia last year I was told again and again that the people of Armenia are forever grateful to Canada and Canadians.

Employment December 7th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Finance.

In the past when profits were made, more jobs were created. In light of record corporate profits in some sectors, the banks especially, can the minister explain why there are also a record number of layoffs? Does the minister have any plan to encourage reinvestment of these profits to create new jobs for Canadians?

Airline Safety November 30th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Transport.

Considering that pilot safety is one of the most serious issues facing the Canadian airline industry today, can the minister tell us when he will implement the flight duty regulations introduced this summer?
