Statements in the House

Pearson Airport November 4th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, when the original announcement was made by my predecessor, it was always envisaged that there would be adjustments to that payment. That is what is reflected in the estimates.

Criminal Code October 31st, 1997

moved that Bill C-16, an act to amend the Criminal Code and the Interpretation Act (powers to arrest and enter dwellings), be read the second time and referred to a committee.

Ports October 30th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member knows Bill C-9 is now before committee.

If he is worrying about political pressure, he might want to apply some political pressure of his own and raise this matter in committee where it should be raised.

Canada Shipping Act October 30th, 1997

moved for leave to introduce Bill C-15, an act to amend the Canada Shipping Act and to make consequential amendments to other acts.

(Motions deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed.)

Highway System October 29th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, once the federal budget is balanced, perhaps we can talk about more money for road repairs, but not right now.

Highway System October 29th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, I did indeed recently meet my Quebec counterpart, Mr. Brassard, and we discussed a number of topics in the area of transport.

As he knows, this government is concerned about the national highway system. I would point out that since the last election we have invested $9.1 million on roads in his own riding. I think that is a strong response by our government.

Transportation October 28th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, the government and, indeed, all stakeholders are concerned that there not be a delay in the grain transportation review. However, as a government we have to be careful not to do anything that impinges on the integrity of the process of the CTA in hearing the wheat board complaint.

Preparatory work is under way. Very soon I will be announcing the appointment of an eminent person to conduct the grain review, to deal with the preparatory work and to continue in such a way that we will not transgress any of those items now being discussed at the CTA.

Operation Respond October 28th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, after many years of lobbying it was this government in 1997 that decided to fund Operation Respond. I think that is very commendable. We share the hon. member's concerns.

A period of evaluation is going on right now. Once that is concluded I will be able to address more fully the issue at hand.

Highways October 27th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, unlike the member's question, I will give an non-convoluted answer. No.

Railway Transportation October 24th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, I am the Minister of Transport.
