Mr. Speaker, this morning the Minister of Health made an announcement that will improve the health of Canadians living in rural areas.
Can the minister tell the House how the world health program and the Canada Health Infostructure Partnership Program will bring better health services to Canadians who live in rural areas?
Rural Development June 9th, 2000
Mr. Speaker, because rural communities in my riding and across Canada are asking what our government has done recently for rural Canada, could the Secretary of State for Rural Development please update the House on what recent actions the federal government has undertaken to benefit agricultural rural communities?
National Hire-A-Student Week June 7th, 2000
Mr. Speaker, this is National Hire-a-Student Week. I am taking the occasion to point out the success of this HRDC program.
Last year, for instance, more than 447,000 young Canadians received job search assistance, or they found employment through the HRDC offices for students.
Students who have had the experience of job searching are on the staff of the HRDC offices to make the search easier for fellow students. They provide information on programs especially designed to help in the job search. They organize career planning sessions. They assist in developing resumes and cover letters. They offer advice on job interview techniques.
The riding I represent, Hastings—Frontenac—Lennox and Addington, is an example of the success of this program. More than 200 students have been placed in jobs in the riding already this year.
Sarah Doran and Murray Maracle in the HRDC office in Napanee and Kathy Barkley in the Bancroft office are examples of the outstanding student leaders across Canada helping others.
Employers in my riding and in ridings across Canada benefit greatly from the National Hire-a-Student Week sponsored by HRDC.

Mr. Speaker, as chair of the subcommittee on Private Member's Business I did not vote on the last bill but I need to vote with the government on this one.

Madam Speaker, it is probably too much to ask my hon. colleague, but I do wish that members on all sides of the House would take the time to respond to their constituents and to put some of the facts out: the fact that there is not a billion dollar boondoggle; and, the fact that there is not $1 billion missing. However, they take all their facts from their national tabloid which is under some other name on the news stand.
That same party and those same members talk about political interference. My question is, how can my colleagues stand in their places and say that there is political interference when more than 50% of the funds from grants and contributions went to opposition ridings?
Board Of Governors Of The Royal Military College Of Canada June 6th, 2000
Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise in the House today to bring your attention to, and applaud the efforts of, the Board of Governors of the Royal Military College of Canada who are in Ottawa today for their quarterly meeting.
This group of prominent Canadians works tirelessly and with little compensation to review and approve the strategic direction of one of Canada's finest post-secondary institutions.

Madam Speaker, I am grateful to have the opportunity to ask a question of the member for Vancouver East, who is a hard working member of our committee. However, first I wish to point out that my colleague must have sat at a different committee meeting than I. She mentioned that she heard people repeatedly talking about interference in the grants and contributions process. I would ask my colleague to table any evidence she has with respect to political interference, or interference of any kind.
This debate concerns having an independent public inquiry. I believe that my colleague is late on the issue. We had an inquiry and we heard witnesses from many walks of life.
Does my colleague not recognize the honest work and effort of the auditor general and his department? I do not believe we could get any person or department which would be more independent.

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. The member should withdraw her comments about committee time. I have sat on that committee for six years, along with my hon. colleague, and the opposition always had its fair share and more.

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
Canada first gained fame as a agriculture powerhouse through the development of marquis wheat in 1906. Science will be even important to ensure the agri-food sector remains competitive and is environmental sustainable.
What is the minister doing to foster new generation of top minds in agricultural research?
