Statements in the House

Goods And Services Tax June 2nd, 1994

Mr. Speaker, in the next few weeks the Standing Committee on Finance will be making a report to the House on the matter of the replacement of the GST. After this report is tabled I think there will be opportunities to debate the matter in the House. I would be happy to consult with members on both sides of the House as to how we can use this report as a basis for debate.

Arms Smuggling June 2nd, 1994

Mr. Speaker, as I have said many times, the RCMP has every right to do its job anywhere in the country. There are no "no go" zones. It does not need the government's permission to do its job on native reserves or anywhere else in Canada.

Arms Smuggling June 2nd, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I can assure my hon. colleague that further to my inquiries, my department insists that it has no knowledge whatsoever of the existence of such a briefing note. Let me assure the hon. member that the RCMP, along with Customs, will take the necessary measures to resolve this situation.

Correctional Service Canada June 1st, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I have to check into the facts of the situation with the Minister of National Revenue and I will do that very promptly. I appreciate the hon. member's offer to help but I do not want to put him in a conflict of interest situation.

Correctional Service Canada June 1st, 1994

Mr. Speaker, if the hon. member will give me the names of the people he says are receiving GST rebates I will take it up immediately with the Minister of National Revenue.

As I said yesterday with respect to the matter of elderly inmates receiving CPP and old age pensions, I am looking into that as part of my review of the Corrections and Conditional Release Act to see how this can be dealt with in an appropriate way.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police May 31st, 1994

Mr. Speaker, first of all I am going to read the book that the allegations are based on which have been reported in the press.

In the meantime if anyone has any direct evidence of wrongdoing on which the police should act I think it should be brought to the attention of the proper authorities.

Correctional Service Canada May 31st, 1994

Mr. Speaker, again I repeat this is an issue I am looking at in connection with the tightening up of the parole and correctional system.

I also want to say the hon. member has proven that while I do not attempt to give stupid answers it does not prevent me from receiving stupid questions.

Correctional Service Canada May 31st, 1994

Mr. Speaker, this issue is one that I am looking at in the context of updating and improving our parole and correctional system.

In the meantime, contrary to the suggestions of the Reform Party, I do not think our senior citizens would like to be put in prison.

Human Rights May 30th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member has raised a matter which is of concern I am sure to the constituent in question, but this is something which falls completely under provincial jurisdiction. It is certainly open to the individual in question to challenge the matter in the courts and to seek the support of those who share her views, but I do not think this is a matter for which the federal government has a special role to play and certainly not the Solicitor General, even though I understand the member's concern.

Association Canadienne-Française De L'Ontario May 27th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, we believe that this organization is a very important one indeed. I do not have any detailed answer to give you about the timetable of the various ministers and the possibility that they may be able to attend that convention, but I will look into this matter, because this organization is very important to us, and I speak both as a minister and a member from Ontario.
