Statements in the House

Reform Party September 22nd, 1995

Mr. Speaker, recently members of the Reform Party have been telling us they have all the answers for Atlantic Canada.

In my riding of Annapolis Valley-Hants I am proud to say the government's policies are not holding people back as the Reform Party would claim. Instead, our commitment to youth, our emphasis on training and our focus on helping small business have all helped to create real opportunities and jobs.

It is time the Reform Party came clean with its plans for Canada. The complete dismantling of our social programs, the end of universal health care and the elimination of equalization payments to the provinces are all examples of that party's true national agenda.

The people of Nova Scotia recognize the Reform Party's slash and burn agenda for what it really is: simplistic and clearly out of touch with the views of Canadians.

Motions September 18th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I ask for unanimous consent to withdraw my private member's motion, M-377. This issue has already been dealt with by the House of Commons.

Hants County Youth For Youth September 18th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise today to recognize the efforts of the Hants County Youth for Youth, a group working in my riding of Annapolis Valley-Hants.

Under the Youth Service Canada program, this dynamic group is working to meet local community needs by focusing on a youth newsletter, a project in tourism and to establish a youth centre, which will officially open September 30.

In return, these participants are gaining valuable experience in communication, personal development, entrepreneurial skills and community development. I am proud of the efforts of these young people.

I want also to thank the Hants West District School Board and their partners, the Windsor Plains Recreation and Social Development Committee and the Hants Shore Community Health Centre for making this program a success.

I would ask that all members of the House join me in congratulating everyone involved in the Hants County Youth for Youth program.

Forging The Link June 15th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, on June 8 and 9, Acadia University, Chrysler Canada, the Nova Scotia Department of Education and the Department of Economic Development hosted "Forging the Link", an international symposium on education and the economy. This conference as a preamble to the Halifax summit brought business leaders, educators and youth together to discuss new partnerships between education and the economy.

For young Canadians the chances of finding that first job in a chosen field are a lot better with relevant training and work experience. Whether it is post-secondary education or an internship that helps get a foot in the door, available jobs are going more than ever before to people with more schooling and more skills.

It is crucial therefore that we as a government forge closer links between educators and business. Through important forums such as this, more young Canadians will gain an understanding of the ties between good education and good jobs.

Public Service Awards Of Excellence June 12th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, it is with great pleasure that I rise today to recognize National Public Service Week.

Canada's public servants have developed an enviable reputation worldwide. Their professionalism and dedication is second to none. I am particularly pleased to recognize Master Corporal Steven Vézina of Greenwood in my riding of Annapolis Valley-Hants.

Mr. Vézina is one of 100 hundred public service employees receiving this year's awards of excellence. Mr. Vézina, along with Master Corporal Daniel Coté of Bagotville, Quebec are being honoured for proposing modifications to the cathode ray tube assembly in the CF-18 aircraft. Their suggestion has saved Canadian taxpayers $400,000 a year.

The award of excellence is the highest honour accorded to federal government employees. I am proud to acknowledge the work of Mr. Vézina and all of the recipients for their service and dedication to Canada.
