Canada September 20th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, this summer I had the privilege of visiting eastern Canada after almost 25 years.

My family and I travelled throughout the beautiful province of Quebec, a diamond in the jewel we call Canada. My children were amazed to see all the quaint townships nestled among the rolling hillsides. They will never forget the experience of seeing their geography books come alive.

We continued our travels through picturesque New Brunswick, beautiful Nova Scotia and the pearl of the Atlantic, Prince Edward Island, the cradle of confederation. Unfortunately time constraints did not allow us to visit Newfoundland. These smaller but no less important jewels of our country represent along with Quebec the essence of what makes Canada the greatest country in the world in which to live.

We are all extremely fortunate to live in such a vibrant country. I and all my colleagues specifically those on this side of the House must do everything we can to ensure that Canada stays a united country.

Interest Rates June 14th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the battle lines continue to grow each day concerning who is right and who is wrong in analysing the Canadian economy. On one side people such as Lloyd Atkinson, former head economist at the Bank of Montreal, are saying that unless the Bank of Canada eases up on interest rates, our economy will be heading toward a recession within a year. On the other side is Bank of Canada Governor Gordon Thiessen who feared a move to decrease the interest rate because it would undermine his bank's inflation fighting credentials.

Still other noted economists strongly believe that the Bank of Canada will have no choice but to either lower interest rates or let the dollar weaken to keep the economy afloat. Yesterday's unexpected announcement by the Bank of Canada of a reduction rate by 19 basis points to 7.19 per cent was a welcome relief for Canadians. Our standard of living has steadily declined over the past four years. We need a made in Canada interest rate policy.

Taher S. Madraswalla June 6th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, today I pay tribute to an extraordinary individual. Mr. Taher S. Madraswalla has been on a peace mission for 14 years.

In October 1981, at the age of 18, he left his homeland of Ahmedabad, India, on a bicycle tour and now 14 years and some 116,000 kilometres later he has visited 30 countries spreading his message of peace.

Throughout Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and now Canada he has spread the word of international brotherhood, peace and understanding. Fittingly the last stage of his mission will be to cycle to the headquarters of the United Nations where he is hoping to bring his message to the secretary-general.

In tribute I must quote Mr. Madraswalla:

I have seen too much fighting because of religion and I don't believe that religion and skin colour should keep people apart.

On behalf of all members of the House I congratulate him for dedicating the past 14 years to an honourable goal.
