Statements in the House

Air-India Flight 182 June 17th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, this coming Sunday will mark the 11th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in Canadian history, the bombing of Air-India flight 182. The innocent victims of this mass murder included 278 Canadians of East Indian descent.

Families of these innocent victims have been patiently waiting for justice but the RCMP, after launching the largest probe in history, has failed to lay a single charge. It even offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the arrest of the individuals responsible. That was a year ago and still the victims' families are waiting.

On behalf of the families of the victims I urge the government to immediately establish a royal commission to investigate the biggest act of terrorism ever committed on Canadian soil. These families deserve to know the facts surrounding this tragedy. They deserve no less than honesty and truth from the government.

Criminal Law Improvement Act, 1996 June 11th, 1996

Madam Speaker, I will be voting for the motion.

Gasoline Prices June 10th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, two issues of paramount concern among Canadians are the ever increasing cost of gasoline and the high interest rates on credit cards. On numerous occasions I have stood in this House urging the government to intervene on behalf of the millions of Canadians who are being ripped off by the banking institutions and oil companies.

While I reject the explanation given by oil companies to justify their blatant price gouging of Canadians, I cannot understand why this government will not put its foot down. While Ontarians are angry for having to pay 60 cents a litre, Quebecers should be livid for having to pay 67 cents a litre.

What Canadians want is not another inquiry but a permanent commission established with the mandate to investigate price gouging and the power to roll back prices. If this government is really interested in giving Canadians a break at the gas pumps, then I suggest a business partnership with the government of Iraq. Its oil could be exchanged for our food for the thousands of innocent children-

Supply May 16th, 1996

Human Rights May 8th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, discrimination in any way, shape or form should never be tolerated anywhere in our country. While I strongly believe that all members in this House agree on this important issue, they will also agree that the sanctity of marriage is paramount in our society.

The government's proposed amendments to the Canadian Human Rights Act has caused a fury within our ridings. The overwhelming majority of Canadians believes that this legislation will ultimately change the definition of the traditional Canadian family in the courts.

There is a very simple solution to this dilemma. Today, all members in this House can support a number of motions at report stage of Bill C-33. These motions will protect the definition of family status or marriage. This gesture would show all Canadians that our federal government is committed to the sanctity of the traditional Canadian family.

Gasoline Prices May 6th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, three weeks ago I rose in the House to complain about the gasoline price gouging by the oil companies. This price fixing practice has long been a ploy by the gasoline industry to rob money from the pockets of hard working Canadians.

Various individuals and groups have suggested a boycott of these gasoline companies. I have also asked the government to legislate an end to these price fixing tactics. To date nothing has been done and these multinationals continue to reap the benefits.

I propose a solution to this situation. If our government exchanges surplus Canadian wheat for Iraqi oil I can assure the House it would go a long way toward providing food and medical supplies for the thousands of sick children and women in Iraq while helping some 30 million Canadians by reducing their gasoline prices to 45 cents per litre.

We could save the lives of innocent children in Iraq and boost our economy. It would be a win-win situation.
