International Trade February 14th, 1995

Question No. 120-

United States Entrance Fee February 8th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the question is hypothetical to a degree.

We do not anticipate that this tax will be imposed. If it were to be, there may be measures we can take to respond to such an action on the part of the United States government.

United States Entrance Fee February 8th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, as I indicated to the House yesterday, we have raised this issue with the United States trade representative. We did so last week and we have done so more formally with the State Department. Our protests have been duly noted, but the response has been generally that the proposed measure has no chance of passing through the U.S. Congress.

Indeed it was only today that U.S. Senator Gramm of Texas said the proposal was as dead as Elvis Presley.

Trade February 7th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the basic purpose of the trip was of course just that, to create jobs and increase prosperity in Canada.

In the case of Argentina, the mission led by the Prime Minister signed some $400 million in contracts; in the case of Brazil, some $600 million; and in the case of Chile, some $1.7 billion.

The Prime Minister was also able to assist Chile in furthering the accession of that country to NAFTA. Elsewhere in South America he was able to to give greater reality to our commitment to free trade throughout the western hemisphere.
