Statements in the House

The Budget March 24th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I suggest the hon. member read the budget. Our budget plans are quite clear. We are reducing the deficit dramatically and we are on our way to a balanced budget.

Borrowing Authority Act, 1995-96 March 20th, 1995

Madam Speaker, I rise on a point of order. If the hon. member wishes to send a message to his constituents, he could probably use the post office or Statements by Members and not when commenting on a borrowing bill.

Borrowing Authority Act, 1995-96 March 20th, 1995

moved that Bill C-73, an act to provide borrowing authority for the fiscal year beginning on April 1, 1995, be read the third time and passed.

Budget Implementation Act, 1995 March 20th, 1995

moved for leave to introduce Bill C-76, an Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 27, 1995.

(Motions deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed.)

Financial Institutions March 17th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for his question.

The Department of Finance did issue a press release yesterday inviting interested parties to comment on the mandated five-year review of the federal financial institutions legislation which comes up in 1997. That includes the Bank Act, the Insurance Companies Act, the Trust and Loan Companies Act and the Co-operative Credit Associations Act. We have asked that submissions be received from the public by June 30, 1995.

This is a separate issue from the regulatory and supervisory package which I presented in a white paper. We are very much looking forward to submissions from the public.

The Economy February 20th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member will recall that I spoke out in the early 1990s about the high levels of interest rates and about the policies of the previous government. This government has changed those policies and we are moving not only to cure our deficit but to improve our social programs as well.

The Economy February 20th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I am sure the hon. member has checked the numbers or he would not have asked the question.

I do not have the numbers with me now so I am not able to confirm them. I am sure the hon. member will, in his supplementary question, give me the right answer.

The Deficit February 20th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the millions of Canadians that abandoned the Conservatives gave the hon. member an opportunity to run for Parliament.

Let me tell the hon. member that the changes we made in the last budget were the biggest changes in spending cuts that have been made in any budget in a decade. We are going to continue to move on our path to get the deficit down.

The Deficit February 20th, 1995

There seems to be some disagreement among my colleagues. He should look at the structural pattern in the deficit. We have made some major changes in the structure of the deficit.

Our structural deficit is much lower than it ever was. It is a matter of the changes we made in the last budget and the changes that will be made in this budget which will make that deficit target achievable in the near term.

The Deficit February 20th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member has some economics training and knowledge. He should look at the structural pattern.
