Statements in the House

Radio Canada International December 13th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I want to make it clear that no decision will be made on the CBC's mandate before the Juneau report. That is clear. Similarly, we will not know the future of the CBC's budget before the next federal budget. That is precisely what I said yesterday.

Radio Canada International December 13th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, it goes without saying that I know what goes on at the CBC. What I said yesterday, and my answer is the same today, was that Radio Canada International is the international component of the CBC. It is part of the CBC's overall mandate.

Therefore, the future of Radio Canada International will be decided when we review the CBC's mandate, along with the recommendations made by a special committee.

Radio Canada International December 12th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, there is no about-face. I have said in this House that the future of the CBC would be considered by the government in the course of a review of its mandate. We are waiting for the results of a study of the CBC's mandates made by a special committee. And we intend to determine the future of the corporation within that context.

No, Mr. Speaker.

Mr. Speaker, perhaps our colleague has closer ties to the arts community that I do, but I certainly get their message loud and clear. I do not need to go through him to consult with them. I hear them, I listen to them and we will act in their best interest.

Mr. Speaker, our colleague does not like to be kept in suspense. I indicated that the bill in question was on a critical path. It still is, and it is making headway. In due course, the bill will be tabled in the House.

Quebec Culture December 8th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, nothing could be clearer than a vote on a unique Quebec culture. I will see on Monday how my colleagues will vote in recognizing it. If they remain seated, it is because they do not recognize it. I will be voting in favour.

Quebec Culture December 8th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, we will have an opportunity on Monday, at our next meeting, to speak to the existence of a Quebec identity and a Quebec cultural identity, before the House of Commons. At that point I will look to see whether my colleagues opposite rise in support of the uniqueness of Quebec culture. They may remain seated; I shall rise.

Government Appointments December 7th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, these appointments are scrutinized from that viewpoint as well.

As to the notion that Liberals have no capability to fill any office, the member should remember that the president of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is Perrin Beatty who did not sit with the Liberals in the previous Parliament.

Government Appointments December 7th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, appointments are made as a result of a very careful scrutiny of the ability of people to exercise office. This is what was done in that case, as with any other appointments in my portfolio.
