Statements in the House

The Environment April 18th, 2005

Mr. Speaker, I have not been in this House for long, but one of the things I have learned is that the members opposite are blatantly opportunistic, partisan and misleading the Canadian people. They are running a parallel inquiry to Gomery in the House day after day pretending that they can do better than Gomery.

They are doing the same on climate change. They are pretending that they support Kyoto. They have never supported Kyoto. They do not support Kyoto and they never will.

Forestry March 24th, 2005

Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for reminding me about the verbal diarrhea that came from certain members opposite, accusing me and this government of not keeping our promises.

I am very happy to announce today that the government is putting another $100 million into fighting the pine beetle in British Columbia. This comes on top of $30 million put in, in 2002. We care about resource based communities in the country, and the B.C. caucus fought hard for this. Promise made, promise kept.

Airline Industry March 21st, 2005

Mr. Speaker, we did commit to have an automotive strategy for Canada. We committed to ensure that our decisions were made in a timely manner to meet the needs of the automotive industry.

We are doing exactly the same thing in the aerospace industry. We are meeting Bombardier's timeframes. We are working with the aerospace industry to ensure we have an aerospace industry that is strong in Canada 10 years from now, 20 years from now and 30 years from now, unlike the members opposite who would let it go.

Airline Industry March 21st, 2005

Mr. Speaker, we are working with Bombardier on the C-series project. We are trying to ensure that assembly takes place here in Canada. We will ensure, again, that the aerospace industry in Canada does survive, and that a key anchor in the aerospace industry is kept in place. We will support the aerospace industry and Bombardier.

Airline Industry March 21st, 2005

Mr. Speaker, we are not undermining the economic development of Quebec. We are supporting the aerospace industry in Canada. We are supporting it across Canada. We are supporting Bombardier. We are talking with Bombardier, trying to get the best deal we can for taxpayers and for its workers, and for the aerospace industry in Canada.

Airline Industry March 21st, 2005

Mr. Speaker, we do have a program in place for regional aircraft financing. We are negotiating with Bombardier on appropriate terms that will protect the taxpayer and support Bombardier in this particular purchase.

The Environment March 10th, 2005

Mr. Speaker, I can assure the House that the discussions which are ongoing with the automotive industry will not delay the implementation and release of a climate plan.

Canadian Space Program March 9th, 2005

Mr. Speaker, our trade relationship with the United States has hit a few bumps along the road, but it is stronger than ever. NAFTA has created hundreds of thousands of jobs in this country. It continues to do so and it will continue for years to come.

Technology Partnerships Canada February 24th, 2005

Mr. Speaker, the fact is that we are protecting jobs. We are protecting jobs in an industry that has gone through some very hard times. If that party were in power today, those jobs would be gone. They would be gone to the U.S., to the U.K., to Europe and to China. Those jobs are here because of TPC.

Technology Partnerships Canada February 24th, 2005

Mr. Speaker, I will tell the member what we have received for TPC money. Canadians have jobs. We have done what that party would not do, which is to protect Canadian jobs in the aerospace industry in Canada, as we did with Pratt & Whitney, as we did with Bell Helicopter and as we will continue to do. We will combat foreign subsidies that are attempts to kill Canadian jobs.
