Statements in the House

Public Works and Government Services June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, our government is determined to provide the men and women of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Coast Guard with the equipment they need and to provide taxpayers with the best value for money.

Many companies, including the Davie shipyard, will be able to participate in our national strategy and in these contracts.

Public Works and Government Services June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the member is completely wrong. The decision will be based on the needs of our military, but what is even more important is that it will be made on the basis of what equipment the Canadian Forces need to protect Canada. That is what matters most at the end of the day. This includes participation in foreign missions.

This decision will be made. We do not need any lectures from the member's party.

Public Works and Government Services June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, as I just said, the government has received a report from the independent panel of experts. There are several other reports. Many of them are available on the National Fighter Procurement Secretariat's website. I invite the member to take a look.

Meanwhile, the decision will be based on the benefits to Canadian industry, as she said. We will also look at life cycle costs.

What is really important, though, is knowing what the Canadian Forces need to protect Canada and participate in missions with our allies.

Public Works and Government Services June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, as I mentioned earlier, the government has received a report from the independent panel of experts, including several other reports that it is reviewing right now. It is looking at the different options in terms of defence capabilities, benefits to Canadian industry, and finally life-cycle costs. These are all important factors.

What is really important, though, is that the men and women in uniform have the equipment that they need to defend Canada and to participate in missions with our allies.

Public Works and Government Services June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, as I just said, the government has received several reports, including that from the independent panel of experts. The government is reviewing these reports in terms of the defence capabilities, the total life cycle costs and the benefits to Canadian industry.

When the government has assessed the options, an announcement will be made. We will ensure that our air force has the equipment it needs to do its job.

Public Works and Government Services June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, several reports have been received by the government, including that from the independent panel of experts. The government is reviewing these reports in terms of the overall defence capabilities and the benefits to Canadian industry, and, importantly, the total life cycle costs.

When that analysis is completed, an announcement will be made to the Canadian public.

Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act June 12th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, I listened carefully to the member's speech. He said that the minister already had the tools to revoke citizenship from dual citizens if they commit fraud. I hope he realizes that the minister is able to do that now.

Is the member defending the status quo and saying that it is acceptable to be able to revoke citizenship from dual citizens if they commit fraud, but not if they commit more serious offences such as terrorism, spying or treason?

Public Works and Government Services June 6th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, let me repeat once again, no decision has been made on the CF-18 replacement.

In the evaluation of the different options, we are looking at defence capabilities. Of course we are looking at industrial benefits, and we are looking at the best value for Canadian taxpayers. Once that evaluation is complete, we will be making sure that the information is revealed to Canadians in due course.

Public Works and Government Services June 6th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, I will repeat, for the benefit of the opposition, that we are currently conducting an evaluation following the seven-point plan. Many of those reports are actually available on the website. The reports are being scrubbed for commercially sensitive information as well as for making sure that there is no classified information that goes out.

Once the evaluation of those options is complete, we will be announcing a decision to the Canadian public in due course.

Public Works and Government Services June 6th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, a panel of independent experts ensured that the evaluation of options was rigorous and impartial and that the results to be made public are comprehensive and understandable. As we have said repeatedly, in due course we will be sharing unclassified and non-confidential business information from the evaluation of options.

We will not take lectures from the NDP, or the Liberals for that matter, on military procurement. When it comes to providing equipment for the military, we have delivered.
