Statements in the House

Business of Supply September 26th, 2024

Madam Speaker, Conservative members in this chamber are saying that members of the New Democratic Party are lying, when it is clear that the member for Edmonton Strathcona simply stated a series of facts that took place yesterday. I know those are facts because we all heard what was said in this chamber. I appreciate that the Speaker's office is now considering this, and we expect a quick and judicious response to what is extreme cowardice from the members on that side of the House, who cannot admit—

Petitions September 26th, 2024

Madam Speaker, today I would like to table a petition on behalf of Canadians who are concerned about the situation in Sudan, where 25 million people, 14 million of whom are children, need immediate humanitarian assistance and support. Alarmingly, 17.7 million people, more than one-third of the country's population, are facing acute food insecurity issues under a warning of potential famine.

More than 8.6 million people have fled their homes since the conflict started, including families of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Nearly 230,000 severely malnourished children in refugee camps are facing death in the coming months if they do not get food and health care, with 13 children dying each day according to recent reports by Doctors Without Borders.

This petition has several calls to action, including implementing temporary processing measures for Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers recognized by the UNHCR to be offered resettlement to Canada; granting temporary visas for evacuees to travel; urgently pushing the two rival factions to impose a temporary ceasefire to ensure the safe and adequate delivery of humanitarian aid; and calling upon bordering countries to open secure corridors to facilitate humanitarian aid, in addition to several other requests.

Points of Order September 25th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. During question period, we clearly heard a very derogatory, homophobic and cowardly comment coming from the Conservative benches and directed at the Prime Minister. Clearly Conservative MPs heard it, because many of them started to laugh.

I have listened to the feed on ParlVU and can hear the remark.

I urge you, Mr. Speaker, to review the tapes and come back with a ruling.

Foreign Affairs September 25th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, Israel's horrifying and indiscriminate bombings of Lebanon continue, and Canada is nowhere to be found. Hundreds of civilians have been killed, including two Canadians and dozens of children. There are tens of thousands of Canadians in Lebanon. Our constituents are terrified of what will come next. Canada must immediately call for de-escalation and take real action to create peace and safety for everyone in the region.

When will the Prime Minister act to save Canadians in Lebanon and their families?

Business of Supply September 24th, 2024

Madam Speaker, there is no doubt that the Conservatives have treated indigenous people in this country with such immense malice, whether it was from the water legislation that ultimately was defeated in court because it failed to deliver clean water or whether it was child and family services that Conservatives continued to pump money into while families continued to get broken. There is no question that in their time, the Conservatives were brutal to indigenous people.

However, the Liberal member mentioned that the Liberals have served indigenous people to the maximum extent to which they possibly could. I want to correct the record on that because time and time again, several promises that the Liberal government made have been broken, whether it is on trying to reform child and family services by way of Bill C-92, which many nations, still today, cannot access because of the lack of funding; whether it is on the murdered and missing indigenous women and girls inquiry, where it would take generations to actually implement all the calls to action at the pace the government is going; whether it is the failure to ensure that clean water in indigenous communities is actually delivered by way of a comprehensive clean water strategy; or lastly, whether it is on housing.

As the New Democratic Party's critic for indigenous housing, I can say that less than 1% of all allocated funding for indigenous housing has gone out the door. That is shameful in a housing crisis. In my community of Edmonton Griesbach, for example, there are 4,011 people who are unhoused or without stable housing as of July. This is a crisis manifesting in indigenous communities that is then being transitioned to poverty in our streets.

How can the member explain the massive difference between his party and the Conservatives, who continue to treat—

Housing September 18th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, what is not in provincial jurisdiction is what is happening in Edmonton Griesbach. The federal government is set to bulldoze hundreds of homes in my community so that developers can get rich. These homes are on public land and are some of the last affordable units in my city due to decades of Liberal and Conservative cuts. Kim, a single mom raising a child with a disability, is scared she will be homeless.

Will the Prime Minister stop the demovictions, stop selling off land to rich developers and build homes that people can actually afford?

Indigenous Affairs September 17th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, over the span of 19 days, seven indigenous people were killed by police. Communities are disturbed, but unfortunately these tragedies are known all too well by indigenous people. This is colonialism and systemic racism that continues to persist under consecutive governments.

First nations, Métis and Inuit have the solutions to end this violence: No more indigenous children getting a bullet instead of help.

Why will the Minister of Public Safety not act to ensure accountability and justice for these families?
