Mr. Chair, I do not think any of that is new.

I also note that some of the $300 million is for one time employee reduction. How much is going to job cuts? How many jobs does the minister intend to cut? Will those all come from Chalk River or will they be spread around the corporation? Is this employee reduction connected to the sale of AECL assets?

Business of Supply May 31st, 2010

Mr. Chair, in the supplementary estimates A for 2010-2011, how much of the additional $300 million for AECL is for new reactor technology development? How much of it is to support the bid to build new reactors at Darlington and how much is earmarked for a new reactor to replace the NRU at Chalk River?

The Liberals slew the Mulroney deficit. We cut personal and business taxes when we had surpluses because it was the right thing to do.

What did the Prime Minister and his Reform colleagues do? They voted against every tax cut for 10 years. Now they want to use borrowed money to pay for corporate tax cuts when the country is mired in a $54 billion Conservative deficit.

It is thanks to a decade of sound Liberal financial management that we are not in the same mess as Greece and other countries.

Mr. Speaker, that minister drove the province of Ontario into debt. Now he is doing the same to our country.

Mr. Speaker, it is the wrong choice to cut taxes for the largest and wealthiest corporations while the global economy remains fragile. It is the wrong choice to cut taxes for the largest and wealthiest corporations while a debt crisis rages in Europe. It is the wrong choice to cut taxes for the largest and wealthiest corporations when markets fluctuate at the drop of a hat.

Why does the government plan to borrow money and mortgage our children's future to pay for its reckless corporate tax cuts?

Taxation May 12th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, it is thanks to a decade of Liberal tax cuts.

The Liberals cut both personal and business taxes when we had surpluses because it was the fiscally responsible thing to do. Now the Conservatives are offering more tax breaks for wealthy corporations, paid for with borrowed money. This will put us deeper in debt and leave those most in need more vulnerable.

Why are the Conservatives making such reckless and ideological choices?

Mr. Speaker, Canada's corporate taxes are already the second lowest in the G8, thanks to a decade of Liberal tax cuts—

Mr. Speaker, leadership is about choices. On this side, we have a plan to reduce the deficit and we make vital investments in learning, care and innovations. The Conservatives have made a different choice: more tax cuts for wealthy corporations, paid for with borrowed money, but fewer services for ordinary Canadians.

Why are the Conservatives taking money from children and from families to help corporations that already have the second lowest tax rate in the G8, 25% lower than in the U.S.?

Mr. Speaker, we know the act has dentures. That is quite right. And they were removed at some of the most expensive restaurants around town, the watering holes where the Conservative members entertain their friends and give them access, as I have described, special friends and special access.

I think the point is that parliamentary secretaries are exempt from the act by design. It was by intent, this little loophole. It is a brilliant but devious loophole that was created so that their special friends could legally have special access.
