Statements in the House

Privilege October 7th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleague from Avignon—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia, because it was really a pleasure to hear someone give the House such a great summary of the problem. I am very grateful that she is taking the subject so seriously.

If I understand correctly, the motion asks that this whole issue be referred to the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs. I would like my colleague to comment on that. Does she think we should wrap up debate here and refer the matter to committee?

François Giguère October 3rd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, a few days ago, we were saddened to learn of the passing of François Giguère, a paragon of community involvement and tenant rights advocacy. Mr. Giguère spent years campaigning for everyone to have a roof over their head. More than that, he put words into action with initiatives such as SOLIDES, an organization that buys aging apartment buildings, renovates them and makes them available for rent at prices tenants can afford.

Mr. Giguère and I crossed paths several times, including during election campaigns. He made sure that all the candidates were well aware of their demands. He helped Châteauguay set the bar for social and affordable housing initiatives. This is a great loss for our community.

I extend my deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues and friends.

Families, Children and Social Development September 20th, 2024

Madam Speaker, we know that families across the country are struggling with the cost of living, including in my riding, Châteauguay—Lacolle, which will soon be called Chateauguay—Les Jardins‑de‑Napierville.

The Canada child benefit is a source of support for families in my riding. Can the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development inform the House about the impact this important benefit has had on Canadian families?

Société locative d'investissement et de développement social September 19th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, it is so exciting to be back in the House and to be able to continue working for the wonderful people of Châteauguay—Lacolle, soon to be known as Châteauguay—Les Jardins-de-Napierville.

It is especially exciting to be able to implement federal programs to make life more affordable for Canadians. Over the summer, I saw first-hand in my riding how our action plan is working and making life easier for hundreds of households. I had the opportunity to visit SOLIDES, the Société locative d'investissement et de développement social, which is the largest property owner in Châteauguay. This organization buys and renovates apartment buildings and rents them out at affordable prices. This model can and should be replicated across Canada. SOLIDES was recently allocated more than $3 million from the affordable housing fund to help renovate and maintain its buildings.

I would like to congratulate the entire team at SOLIDES on their excellent work.

Committees of the House September 19th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, with respect to the housing situation, I am very proud of the extremely interesting projects implemented in my riding recently. They were designed and facilitated by community groups with some expertise in affordable housing. These include groups like SOLIDES, the Société locative d'investissement et de développement social, and FROHME, the Fédération régionale des OSBL d'habitation de la Montérégie et de l'Estrie. These groups believe that their ongoing ability to take action is very important to get projects off the ground.

I would like to ask my colleague whether she is prepared to support these community organizations or, conversely, whether she is going to cut the budgets, funding, and grants that help these groups get the job done.

Mr. Speaker, my question about—

Committees of the House September 19th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, we can be passionate about the issues, but we have to respect the people who work here. I thank my colleague for his point of order.

Where I am from—

Châteauguay—Lacolle September 17th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I am proud to be part of a government that understands the importance of supporting our tourism businesses and that is stepping up to help.

This summer, I saw first-hand how the federal government's support is making a difference in my riding of Châteauguay—Lacolle, soon to be known as Châteauguay—Les Jardins-de-Napierville, and how it is helping businesses like Parc Safari and organizations like Héritage Saint‑Bernard improve their service offerings and attract a broader, more diverse range of visitors from outside the region, the province and even the country.

I would like to acknowledge the excellent work of the teams at Parc Safari and Héritage Saint‑Bernard. These are the two biggest tourist attractions in Montérégie Ouest. Their initiatives, know‑how and commitment are raising our profile.

Online Harms Act June 7th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I really appreciated my colleague's speech.

This a very important issue in our region. We have already seen cases of abuse. It is very concerning.

According to what we are hearing today, some people oppose the bill because they say that freedom of expression needs to be protected at all costs. I think my colleague understands that there should be limits. Protecting our young people is one of those limits.

I would like to hear more about that from her.

Canadian Heritage June 7th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, tech giants have dominated the online space for years. For far too long, they have gotten away without contributing their fair share to the audiovisual sector and Canadian creators, while generating millions in revenues from their work. Our government passed historic legislation last year to level the playing field between platforms and creators.

Can the Minister of Canadian Heritage provide this House with an update on the implementation of the Online Streaming Act?
