Mr. Speaker, Canadians deserve to feel safe, and as a government, we are taking action so that they will.

Bill C-75 already reduced the burden of proof in intimate partner violence cases when it came to bail. We are going beyond that. We have met with our provincial and territorial counterparts to bring reform to the bail system.

We recognize that this is something we have to work on with the provinces. Obviously we will take action in areas of our jurisdiction. We will move, and we will find a solution together.

Mr. Speaker, the purpose of Bill C‑5 was to address the problem of systemic racism and the systemic overrepresentation of indigenous and Black people in the justice system. Serious crimes always deserve serious consequences. If my hon. colleague wants to attack a judgment handed down by a judge in our system, he is free to do so, but I think it would be far more productive to work together to come up with solutions to other problems in the system.

Mr. Speaker, what the hon. member is saying is entirely false. Serious crimes deserve serious consequences. Bill C‑5 allows for such sentences only in cases where there is no threat to public safety. We are working with the provinces and territories to address the problems in the system. We will improve the system by working together. Sloganeering does not help. It is by working together that we will find the solution.

Mr. Speaker, it is clear that my hon. colleague did not hear the response from yesterday. I will repeat it.

We have worked with the provinces and territories to make changes to the bail system in order to address the issue of serious repeat offenders and to give the community a role in bail decisions.

Together we will address this issue and find solutions.

Mr. Speaker, we have been working with justice ministers and public safety ministers from the provinces and territories since last October. We appreciate that Canadians need to feel safe and Canadians have a right to be safe, which is why we have been working together on bail reform to address repeat offenders, violent crime, crime with knives and crime with guns. We are moving ahead with that plan, as we have stated in the joint communiqué. This is a problem that will be solved by working together.

That is why, on March 10, I met with my provincial and territorial counterparts to work on bail reform to include repeat, violent offenders and to include crimes with knives. We have a plan. I invite the hon. member to read the joint communiqué that came out of that federal, provincial and territorial meeting of justice and public safety ministers. We are moving ahead with that plan.
