Mr. Speaker, first of all, I too read the La Presse article this morning. At that time, I requested a report on this from the deputy minister, and I await that information.

Foreign Missions and International Organizations Act November 29th, 2001

Madam Speaker, I rise on a point of order. I would simply like to remind the House that the debate is on Bill C-35. There was a very long debate on Bill C-36. There was 82 hours of debate. I would like to know the members thoughts on Bill C-35, and I have already read this morning's papers.

Amateur Sport November 28th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the sports news always come at the end of the hour.

Following the National Summit on Sport, we have decided to develop a Canadian sport policy that would promote fairness, and support women in sport.

To this end, we are not only putting in place a policy that has the unanimous support of all of the provinces and territories, but I am happy to announce that from May 16 to 19, we will be hosting a world conference on women in sport, in addition to a national conference.

The international conference will take place in Montreal and the national conference will be held in Hamilton, for the purpose of developing a Canadian strategy for women in sport.

(Motions deemed adopted and bill read the first time and printed.)

Sports June 7th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, since the MPs were defeated yesterday by the pages, I had to do something about soccer.

I have the pleasure to announce to members that we have released a feasibility study in response to the commission that bears the name of the member for Toronto-Danforth. The Government of Canada will work with the Canadian Soccer Association to hold the World Cup in soccer here in Canada in 2010.

I am also announcing a contribution of $500,000 for a world cup for girls under 19, which will be headquartered in Edmonton.

Farm Credit Corporation Act June 7th, 2001

moved that the bill, as amended, be concurred in.

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation May 11th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, maybe I should call the hon. member the new member for flip-flop, because the Alliance was against funding CBC.

We will take on our responsibilities. We will wait for the committee report and then pick it up from there.

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation May 11th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to say that the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage has chosen to undertake a study on the state of the Canadian broadcasting system. It will work for the next 18 months. We will wait for its report and then pick it up from there.

Amateur Sport May 7th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I have no intention of negotiating here. We have been working on this issue for a few months, unlike the Quebec government which has been at it for three years.

We wanted to propose an infrastructure program in which the provincial, municipal and federal governments could have been involved, but the Quebec government said no.

We are looking at the issue and I am working with my colleagues, so that we can soon come up with an answer.

Sports April 24th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, it is surely a non-partisan issue. I see everybody is applauding our athletes and amateur sport.

I would like to pay tribute to the sports community, to the Canadian people and to the government which considers sport as an investment, not as an expense.

This weekend the Prime Minister will chair an important summit where we will put together an action plan.

This action plan will enable us to ensure that there is leadership, partnership and accountability in sports. Canada will have a sports system.
