Statements in the House

Human Resources Development February 29th, 2000

Louder, louder.

Sports November 30th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, this is surely one of the most important questions today.

Support to women in sports is a priority of the federal government. Sports Canada's goal is to attain equality for women in sports, ensuring that females have the same opportunities in sports as males.

In order to qualify for federal funding, national sports organizations and national sports centres must have an official policy showing that they are committed to fairness for all female athletes and must undertake to introduce appropriate initiatives. That is what the Liberals are doing.

Supply November 30th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I would like initially to applaud the initiative by the Bloc Quebecois on today's motion.

I think, however, the debate should go a little deeper. I find regrettable the remarks made by my friends in the Reform Party on the Firearms Control Act. We should applaud the passing of this legislation, especially in light of the massacre at the école Polytechnique a few years ago. I find such remarks rather regrettable.

I would like my colleague from Hochelaga—Maisonneuve to tell me whether we should restrict the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Second, in his own view of things, would legislation on marijuana, for example, also have an impact on organized crime?

Valérie Hould-Marchand November 23rd, 1999

Mr. Speaker, one does not pull on a flower to make it grow faster.

I have been saying from the beginning that this government has acted seriously. We proposed a mediation process, followed by arbitration. With regard to arbitration, Ms. Hould-Marchand herself said she does not want that. I will consult with both sides. We will check the facts, then I will make a decision.

Amateur Sport November 22nd, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I believe the Government of Canada has shown its willingness to address this very serious matter right from the start. That is why I initiated a process of mediation right at the beginning, to be followed by arbitration.

I have spoken with Valérie myself, and she said she did not want imposed arbitration. I am in the process of thinking over the possibility of an investigation, but the decision has not been made, and will not be made until such time as I have spoken to both parties.

Canada Pension Plan November 1st, 1999

Mr. Speaker, third, pursuant to section 117 of the Canada Pension Plan, I have the pleasure to table, in both official languages, two copies of the annual report of the Canada Pension Plan for fiscal year 1997-98.

This report should be submitted to the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation November 1st, 1999

Privacy And Access To Information November 1st, 1999

Mr. Speaker, on behalf of my colleague, the Minister of Human Resources Development, it is my pleasure to table three documents.

First, pursuant to section 72 of the Privacy Act and section 72 of the Access to Information Act, I have the pleasure of submitting, in both official languages, two copies of the annual report on the administration of the Privacy Act and the Access to Information Act within Human Resources Development Canada for the 1998-99 fiscal year.

This report should be referred to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

Petitions June 10th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I wish to present a petition calling on the House to pass the bill introduced by other members and myself for the purpose of overturning the conviction of Louis Riel for high treason and officially commemorating his role in advancing the cause of Canadian confederation and the rights of the Metis people and the people of western Canada.

I also wish to mention the exceptional work done by two of the 120 young students involved. Véronique Pilote-Charron and Jacinthe Desforges did a particularly fine job on this file.

Supply June 7th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. I would remind this House that the Quebec caucus, yours truly among them, supported Quebec's candidacy. I did so publicly on CHRC.
