Statements in the House

Committees of the House February 1st, 2008

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the third report related to the nomination of Michel Roy as chair of the board of directors of Telefilm Canada.

St. Marys Minor Hockey Association January 29th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to congratulate the St. Marys Minor Hockey Association on its 50th anniversary. Recently, the community got together to celebrate this very important milestone.

St. Marys minor hockey has always had strong support from the community, the municipality, the sponsors, and the town employees who maintain the facilities.

Minor hockey in St. Marys is so important to the parents, coaches and, especially, the kids. The players come away with the lessons of hard work and sportsmanship, as well as memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

There is something about an early morning at the rink watching kids play hockey that is uniquely Canadian, no matter where we are in Canada.

Finally, I would like to recognize all those volunteers in St. Marys and across my riding of Perth—Wellington for their tireless efforts in support of all minor sports. They make me proud.

Committees of the House December 7th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the second report of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage related to the nomination of Hubert T. Lacroix to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CBC/Radio-Canada.

Public Opinion Polls December 4th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, according to a Public Works and Government Services Canada report, the federal government increased spending on polling and focus groups last year compared to previous years.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services comment on this recent report?

Infrastructure November 22nd, 2007

Mr. Speaker, municipalities in my riding are looking forward to the roll out of the building Canada fund.

Unfortunately, most municipalities in my riding of Perth—Wellington did not benefit from COMRIF, created by the previous Liberal government. Most municipalities applied to all three rounds and received nothing. In the meantime, important projects have been put on hold.

Funding from our new building Canada fund along with significant investments in the gas tax fund will help our municipalities upgrade and renew their infrastructure. Our $33 billion of infrastructure funding over the next seven years is the largest single federal commitment to public infrastructure in 50 years.

I look forward to working with the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and his team in support of our municipalities.

Committees of the House November 21st, 2007

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the first report of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage related to the directives from the governor in council amending the interpretation of the broadcasting policy or the telecommunications policy for Canada.

Charter of Rights and Freedoms October 30th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, could the member enlighten us any more on the property rights that he is putting forward.

Committees of the House June 20th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the 21st report of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage related to the nomination of Mr. Tom Perlmutter to the position of Government Film Commissioner of the National Film Board of Canada.

Criminal Code June 13th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, I very much welcome the bill coming forward. As chair of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, I know it has been a thorn in our side. We feel piracy is definitely theft, when one steals something and then sells it. It is no different than stealing a car, or stealing money or whatever.

It is in the right area now with the Minister of Justice. It is a justice issue, and I know the movie industry, both offshore and in Canada, will welcome this with open arms.

When will the bill come into effect? Could it be this fall?

Arts and Culture May 31st, 2007

Mr. Speaker, this past Monday I had the privilege of representing the Minister of Canadian Heritage at the opening night of the Stratford Festival.

On this season's playbill, plays like King Lear, Oklahoma and To Kill a Mockingbird will not disappoint.

Our thanks go out to Richard Monette who will retire this year after 14 successful seasons as artistic director.

Theatre audiences will also love the Drayton Festival Theatre which offers a playbill including Cash on Delivery, Funny Money and The Buddy Holly Story.

The Drayton Festival, under the artistic direction of Alex Mustakas, has theatres across southwestern Ontario, in Drayton, St. Jacobs, Grand Bend and Penetanguishene.

I encourage all members to visit my riding of Perth—Wellington this summer or any other theatre across our great country for culture that is second to none.
