National Defence October 23rd, 2002
Mr. Speaker, today the Minister of National Defence will be opening Damage Control Training Facility, or DCTF, Kootenay in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The facility was built at a cost of $21 million and will provide Canadian Forces personnel with the opportunity to train for a variety of possible situations.
The facility will house 15 burn rooms; 2 flood rooms; a mock helicopter prop, complete with a simulated flight deck; a nuclear, biological and chemical contamination training area; a smoke maze; and even electrical panels for casualty power training.
I am delighted to see this sort of investment in the Canadian Forces in the Halifax area. I hope this announcement is the beginning of a long trend of more of the same.
Canada Pension Plan October 22nd, 2002
Mr. Speaker, I listened with interest to my hon. colleague's comments. It is certainly an interesting topic. I would like to ask him, though, how he feels about the aging society. We hear so much about the grey way, with boomers getting older. There are so many concerns about that having an impact on the Canada pension plan. I would like to ask him what impact he sees coming from that greying population.

Chartered Accountant Firms October 10th, 2002
Mr. Speaker, in response to the recent events on the world financial markets, federal and provincial regulators and Canada's chartered accountants have created a new system to oversee the auditors of public companies in Canada. This new body will require that Canadian chartered accountant firms undergo frequent and rigorous inspections and implement tighter quality control requirements.
This is good news for all Canadians who place their trust and their investment dollars in the many firms from coast to coast.
The new public oversight system is a step forward in efforts to ensure Canadians receive accurate information on corporate performance. Canadians deserve the peace of mind of knowing that their hard-earned money is working for them.
I am pleased that Canadian companies are spearheading this initiative to protect Canadian investments.
