Statements in the House

Veterans December 6th, 2024

Madam Speaker, I can confirm that the department did not provide funding for this specific project and that Veterans Affairs Canada was not contacted to confirm the list of names appearing on the memorial.

That said, the department is in touch with the organization involved to correct the situation. I expect that this will be done quickly and without delay.

Veterans December 6th, 2024

Madam Speaker, I thank the hon. member for raising this issue in the House.

I can confirm that the department has not provided funding to this specific project and that VAC was not asked to validate the list of names featured on the memorial. That said, Veterans Affairs is in touch with the organization to rectify the matter, and we will.

The executive director of Canadian Trees for Life has said, with respect to the issue, that getting it rectified is a major priority. They expect this to be done swiftly and without delay.

Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada December 2nd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to address a puzzle in our politics.

For years, the Conservative leader and his party have lectured Canadians about the virtues of tax cuts, yet when given the chance to support a GST tax break that puts money in the pockets of working families, what do the Conservatives do? They vote against it.

The Conservative leader carefully crafts an image of caring for Canadians, but when given the chance to support them with tangible relief, he turns his back on them, voting against dental care for seniors and voting against the school food program for kids.

With each vote, we see the puzzle taking shape: a Conservative leader so fixated on politics that he has forgotten the people.

“Canada first” works only when one puts actual Canadians first.

International Trade November 29th, 2024

Madam Speaker, we have had four months of consecutive job growth, one million new jobs since before the pandemic and 20 straight months of wages outpacing inflation. We have delivered $50 billion in auto investment that is creating thousands of jobs in this country. Conservatives, in their track record, lost 300,000 manufacturing jobs. Last night, they delivered a kick in the teeth for working families, voting against the tax cut that we delivered. We will be there for workers. All they do is deliver words.

Government Business No. 43—Proceedings on Bill C‑78 November 28th, 2024

Madam Speaker, I really appreciated my colleague's speech. I do enjoy working with my colleague on the HUMA committee.

Our Liberal government delivered a battery plant for Windsor. There are 2,000 construction workers building the plant, and 2,500 local workers will be building batteries for generations to come. Conservatives voted against it.

We delivered a dental care plan that provided smiles for 15,000 residents in Windsor—Essex to date. Conservatives voted against it.

We are now providing a tax holiday. I spoke to a young family who said that this was going to help them purchase a car seat for their child. It is going to help them purchase clothing and other supplies for their child. However, the Conservatives are going to vote against that too.

The Conservatives are voting against jobs for communities like ours. They voted against smiles for seniors in communities like ours. Now they are voting against giving families the financial breathing space they so deserve.

Could the hon. colleague please address why the Conservatives are against those three things?

Questions on the Order Paper November 25th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, Employment and Social Development Canada, ESDC, undertook an extensive search in order to determine the amount of information that would fall within the scope of this question and the amount of time that would be required to prepare a comprehensive response.

After a thorough analysis of the ESDC grants and contributions database, the department concluded that over 200,000 data entries would be required to ensure a comprehensive response to this enquiry. Producing and validating this volume of information is not possible within the allotted time, as this could lead to the disclosure of incomplete and misleading information.

Employment November 7th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the mistreatment and abuse of temporary foreign workers is unacceptable. Everyone deserves to work in safe, healthy and dignified conditions. Under our watch, we have mandated that employers provide all TFWs with information about their rights in Canada, prohibited reprisal by employers against workers who come forward with complaints and prohibited employers from charging recruitment fees to workers.

In budget 2024, we are investing $41 million to ensure that TFWs know their rights by funding community organizations. We know there is more work to do—

Privilege November 5th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I have been listening intently to what the member has said. When it comes to the Conservative motion and these documents, the Conservatives scream out that they want to see everything. However, when it comes to foreign interference, when it comes to getting a security clearance and when Canadian lives are at stake and at risk because of foreign actors, the leader of the Conservative opposition says that he does not want to hear or see anything. He will not get a security clearance. He will not see what the risks are to his own caucus and to Canadians.

Does the member not see the screaming hypocrisy of that position?

Privilege November 5th, 2024

Madam Speaker, I have a great deal of respect for my colleague across the way. Both our fathers were in the Solidarity movement fighting the communist dictatorship in Poland. It was a country where politicians directed the police, and they directed the police to arrest my father.

Does the member not see how this Conservative motion weakens not only the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but also that incredibly important wall separating the politicians and the police in this country?

Foreign Interference November 4th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, this Friday, my wife and I were honoured to join the vibrant and growing Sikh community in Windsor—Tecumseh to celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas. We prayed together, lit clay lamps, rolled roti in the kitchen and shared langar.

The news from the RCMP that foreign agents of the Government of India participated in serious crimes on Canadian soil against Sikh Canadians has shaken my community, just as it has shaken all Canadians from coast to coast to coast. To think for even one second that a member of my community could be targeted or killed for their religious or political beliefs by an agent working on behalf of a foreign government is abhorrent. An attack on one Canadian is an attack on all Canadians and our shared values of democracy and freedom.

It is past time for the leader of the Conservative Party to join all opposition leaders in getting his security clearance. It is past time to put the nation ahead of himself. There is nothing more important than protecting Canadians.
