[Petitions, September 19th, 2018]

Mr. Speaker, I have two petitions to present today. The first petition is in support of postal banking.

The petitioners acknowledge that nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders whose crippling lending rates affect the poor, marginalized, rural and indigenous communities the most.

We have 3,800 Canada Post outlets in existence in rural areas where there are few or no banks. Because of these postal outlets, the infrastructure is there to include postal banking.

The petitioners request that the Government of Canada enact my Motion No. 166 to create a committee to study and propose a plan for postal banking under the Canada Post Corporation.

[Veterans Affairs, September 19th, 2018]

Mr. Speaker, for over a year, my office has been helping a mother whose son is in the military. Her son has PTSD and, tragically, is also suicidal.

Despite his serious injury and critical situation, he has been forced to wait for almost a year for his medical claim to be processed by Veterans Affairs. He feels his government has abandoned him, and there are seven others in his unit who feel the same.

When will the government keep its promise to our veterans and get them the help that they so desperately need?

Mr. Speaker, my second petition is in regard to the Thames River system. As we will recall, the Conservative government stripped away environmental protections and the current government promised to bring them back, but did not. Therefore, these petitioners, who are very concerned with the health of this important river, are asking that Parliament support my bill, Bill C-355, which commits the government to prioritize the protection of the Thames River by amending the Navigation Protection Act.

Those predators are crippling members of our community because they charge outrageous rates for loans. There are 3,800 Canada Post outlets that already exist in rural and remote areas where there are fewer or no banks at all. These petitioners are asking Parliament to enact Motion No. 166, my motion to create a committee to study and propose a plan for postal banking under Canada Post Corporation.

Nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders, those predators who take advantage of the poor, marginalized, rural, and indigenous communities in the country. We have 3,800 Canada Post outlets already in existence across rural Canada that are perfectly able to provide financial assistance with respect to postal banking.

The petitioners call on the Government of Canada to enact my motion, Motion No. 166, to create a committee to study and propose a plan for postal banking under the corporation of Canada Post.

Mr. Speaker, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to the predators at payday lenders' institutions. They charge crippling fees that affect the poor, marginalized, rural, and indigenous communities the most. We have 3,800 Canada Post outlets that already exist in rural and remote areas, where there are few or no banks. These outlets are perfectly capable of conducting financial transactions. The petitioners ask the Government of Canada to enact my motion, Motion No. 166, which would create a committee to study and propose a plan for postal banking under Canada Post Corporation.

Mr. Speaker, I have two petitions to present. The first is in support of Bill C-397, which would amend legislation that denies a spouse the pension of military personnel, members of Parliament, judges, employees, public servants, and RCMP if the marriage took place after age 60.

We know very well that spouses provide care, support, and love even after age 60. The petitioners are calling upon the Government of Canada to support my bill, Bill C-397, which would amend all legislation that denies surviving spouses pensions based on the time of their marriage, because even after 60, we can love.

Madam Speaker, my second petition is in support of postal banking.

Nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to predatory payday lenders who charge crippling interest rates, affecting the most marginalized, poor, rural, and indigenous communities in Canada. We have 3,800 Canada Post outlets that already exist in rural areas, where there are fewer or no banks or credit unions. Canada Post has the infrastructure to make a rapid transition to include postal banking.

The petitioners are calling on the Government of Canada to enact Motion No. 166 to create a committee to study and propose a plan, so that we have postal banking under the Canada Post Corporation.

Madam Speaker, I have two petitions. The first is from a group of Canadians who wish the Government of Canada to address the affordability crisis in this country, and to build a fair economy that will lift everyone up, not just a few at the top.

The petitioners are calling on the government to consider Canadians who are struggling every day with the challenges of unaffordable housing, child care, precarious and unreliable work, in addition to the shrinking opportunities faced by these folks. Household debt is at a historic high.

The petitioners call on the Government of Canada to invest in affordable housing, really invest in it, not pretend to invest in it, take concrete measures to address out-of-control housing markets, protect good-paying jobs, and take action to make sure that the wealthy and most profitable corporations pay their fair share.

[Questions Passed as Orders for Returns, June 8th, 2018]

With regard to Canada Post: (a) since January 1, 2009, how many reports or studies were undertaken by Canada Post with regards to postal banking and retail financial services, (i) what were the contents of those reports or studies, (ii) were any reports or studies incomplete, (iii) what were the contents of the final drafts of the incomplete reports or studies, (iv) which individuals or organizations were consulted, (v) which elected officials were allowed to view the contents of any reports or studies; (b) since January 1, 1997, with regard to post office locations, (i) how many post office locations have been closed, including, (ii) the year, (iii) the location address and postal code, (iv) how many moratorium lists were developed with regard to post office closures, (v) what were the post offices included in each list, including an address and postal code, (vi) who was consulted on which post offices were selected for each list, (vii) were lists provided to any federal government task forces, (viii) which lists were provided for each task force, (ix) what is the content of each list; and (c) since January 1, 2009, with regard to mailboxes designed for the public to mail letters, postcards and small packages, (i) how many have been removed, including, (ii) the year, (iii) the location, (iv) what was the criteria used to determine removal?
