Statements in the House

Taxation October 31st, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister's own cabinet minister already admitted that the Liberal government only wants to help people who vote for them. We already have a climate denier Conservative leader who pretends to help people. Now we have an out-of-touch Prime Minister who only acts when it is in his own interests.

New Democrats have proposed taking the GST off of all home heating, a measure that would help all Canadians. When will the Prime Minister stop dividing the country and put in place a measure that gives relief to all Canadians?

Housing October 30th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, Doug Ford and the Greenbelt are the perfect example of the Conservatives' housing strategy: sell public land to their rich developer friends. The Liberals' record after eight years is no better, with record-high rents, renovictions and the worst housing market in the G7. These two parties are looking out for the people profiting from the housing crisis, not the people suffering from it.

When will the government announce measures for building not-for-profit housing?

Taxation October 30th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, last week's announcement on home heating only benefits Canadians who live where Liberals need to save their seats.

All Canadians need some relief when it comes to the cost of home heating. That is why New Democrats proposed taking the GST off all home heating. It would help all Canadians. It is a measure that Liberals and Conservatives have both opposed.

When will the Liberals stop playing games and bring in relief for all Canadians this cold winter?

Housing October 25th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the housing crisis in this country is deeply concerning. People are living in tents. People are living in cars. Now, in Saskatchewan, people are resorting to living in apartment lobbies. This is a direct result of the Liberals and the Conservatives, who have lost a million affordable homes over the past number of years. Even the Saskatchewan Landlord Association is calling for action.

When will the Prime Minister fix the mess he created and house people this winter?

The Economy October 25th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, while Liberals and Conservatives continue to distract, Canadians know that corporate greed is driving up the cost of food.

Two million Canadians used food banks in a single month while large corporations showed profits of almost $4 billion.

When the Conservatives and Liberals have a choice, they always side with CEOs over Canadians. That is why we forced the CEOs to come back before the committee to answer questions that the Conservatives and Liberals refuse to ask.

Will the Prime Minister admit that their approach is a failure?

The Economy October 25th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, two million Canadians had to use the food bank in one month alone. This is the direct result of Liberals and Conservatives who continue to distract from what is going on. The real reason for what is causing this, as Canadians knew really well when they were asked the question, is greedy CEOs.

Why will the Prime Minister not understand what Canadians already do?

Housing October 24th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, unfortunately, we already know that tent cities spring up faster than houses. Take a look on the other side of the river, in Gatineau. What is the Prime Minister doing tonight? He is holding a $1,500-a-head fundraiser in Gatineau. Could he be any more out of touch?

Is the Prime Minister's plan to go chat up wealthy developers again and ask them nicely if they will build affordable housing?

Housing October 24th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the Bank of Canada's interest rates are hurting Canadians such as John Cufflin, a 76-year-old man who had to sell his home because his mortgage payment went from $1,000 a month to $2,600 a month. Now he is not sure he can find a place that he can afford to rent that is in his budget. Tax incentives to private developers alone will not solve this crisis.

When will the Prime Minister get serious about building homes that people can actually afford?

Foreign Affairs October 23rd, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the Hamas terrorist attacks continue. Rockets are being deliberately fired at civilians. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening. More and more innocent Israelis and Palestinians are losing their lives in this horrific war.

When will the government get serious about protecting the innocent and call for a ceasefire?

Foreign Affairs October 23rd, 2023

Mr. Speaker, for two weeks, Israeli families have lived with the pain of loved ones either killed or still held hostage. In the last two weeks, the situation in Gaza has grown dire. Humanitarian aid is trickling in. Thousands have been killed, many of them children. Diverse voices are calling for a ceasefire, including the head of the UN, Canadian aid agencies and even some Liberal MPs.

Will the Prime Minister join the NDP's call for a ceasefire now?
