Petitions October 21st, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I stand today to present a petition on behalf of the people of Garnish, a small rural community in my riding of Random—Burin—St. George's.

The petitioners oppose the reduction in hours at the Canada Post operation in their community. This is happening throughout rural communities in our country. They ask that these hours be reinstated because they need the service, people in the community depend on the service and of course it will also affect the community economically.

The petitioners therefore ask the government to get involved to try to ensure that Canada Post throughout Canada continues to offer a service that the people are entitled to and that they need and deserve.

Ethics October 17th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, Canadians find it hard to believe anything the government has said. Conservative ministers also tried to play dumb with the February 20 email that summarized the deal and claimed that no written records existed.

In court records, the RCMP revealed that Wright provided investigators hundreds of pages of emails as well as a binder labelled “Confidential —Senator Mike Duffy — Schedules...”.

Why did the government mislead the House and claim that no written records existed, when clearly they did? When will it publicly release the email and the binders and come clean on everything else it is trying to hide?

Ethics October 17th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, this spring the Prime Minister and his ministers repeatedly claimed that it was Nigel Wright, only, who knew about the deal with Mike Duffy and the PMO. Unfortunately, even the Minister of Industry said the same thing repeatedly. He said that right after the loan; however, sworn affidavits in court by the RCMP point out that at least three other key staffers in the PMO and Senator Gerstein knew about the deal.

Why are the Conservatives misleading Canadians, and when will they finally get the truth?

Business of the House June 18th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I rise to add my appreciation and that of the Liberals to the comments expressed by the government House leader and the opposition House leader. We say thanks to those who make it possible for this institution to work as effectively and efficiently as it does.

There are times when we question each other and why we are here, but the bottom line is that we all know that we are here to represent the people who made it possible for us to be here on Parliament Hill. We are here to represent Canadians and to do it to the best of our abilities. I think we do that on a daily basis. It is good to be here and to be involved in this consensus tonight. I want to express appreciation to all who made it possible and extend a sincere thanks to all who make it possible for Parliament to run as effectively as it does.

The Environment June 12th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize Bailey Tarrant, a grade nine student at Holy Name of Mary Academy in Lawn in my riding of Random—Burin—St. George's. Bailey recently won an essay contest by the Marine Institute in St. John's, earning her the opportunity to participate in the Arctic expedition as a member of the Students on Ice program. This program makes it possible for young people to visit Canada's north to learn about climate change and global warming and their effect on indigenous cultures.

Bailey is not new to the environmental cause. Since fourth grade, she has been active in the school's eco-kids program. This group of dedicated youth has led the way in their hometown of Lawn, encouraging family and friends to make lifestyle changes that will help the environment. In 2011, they were awarded a Marine Institute Eco-Champ Award and were recently presented with a $25,000 computer lab by Staples Canada.

I ask all members to join me in recognizing Bailey Tarrant and all members of Eco-Kids for their efforts in making a difference not only in their community but in the world.
