Statements in the House

Infrastructure March 27th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, next Tuesday, the building Canada fund will lose nearly 90% of its funding. This will have a huge impact on economic growth in the middle class and on major projects, such as the expansion of the Henri VI highway.

My question is not for the Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs, who will give us a seven-year-old answer. It is for the Minister of Finance.

Will he reverse the decision to cut 90% of the funding for the government's primary infrastructure program?

Infrastructure March 27th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, next Tuesday, the annual budget for the building Canada infrastructure fund will be cut by nearly 90%, putting a hard brake on economic growth for the middle class.

My question is not for the infrastructure minister to rehash budget talking points from seven years ago. My question is for the finance minister: Will he reverse this 90% cut to the government's core infrastructure program?

Agriculture and Agri-Food March 27th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, last fall, when the Conservatives introduced grain by rail legislation, they rejected all proposed amendments by farmers. Their new legislation to address the grain crisis has been described by the Saskatchewan government and many farmers as “deficient” and disappointing.

This time when their legislation goes to committee, will the government members commit to listening to farmers' good advice and accept amendments and improvements?

Infrastructure March 26th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, next week, the infrastructure funding allocated to the building Canada fund will be cut by 87%.

Major projects such as the Champlain Bridge and the widening of the Henri IV highway in Quebec City create middle-class jobs and increase economic productivity. They improve Canadians' quality of life.

Will the Minister of Finance reverse the decision to make massive cuts to infrastructure funding?

Infrastructure March 26th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, this is also for the Minister of Finance, and perhaps he will answer this one.

Next Tuesday, the annual budget for the building Canada infrastructure fund will be cut by 87%. Investments in world-class transit projects create good middle class jobs and improve economic productivity and quality of life.

Will the new Minister of Finance reverse his predecessor's infrastructure cuts?

The Environment March 26th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the government is cutting half of the staff and three-quarters of the funding from its climate change program. The new Minister of Finance is now responsible for those cuts.

Given his past comments, will the minister answer a simple question. Does he accept that climate change is real and is caused by human activity?

Justice March 25th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, Quebec has already started studying the important issue of dying with dignity. Having three judges who represent and understand Quebec is important when making a comprehensive decision on this matter. However, because of the Prime Minister's lack of judgment, there is a vacancy on the bench.

When will the government announce the appointment of a qualified Quebec justice?

Justice March 25th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, there has been a vacancy on the Supreme Court for seven months and counting due to the Prime Minister's poor judgment.

Unless filled, a reduced court will make decisions on matters as fundamental as the structure of our Parliament and Canadians' rights to end of life decisions. Given this urgency, when will the government nominate a qualified candidate?

International Trade March 25th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, on behalf of the Liberal Party, we would like to congratulate the government on, and signal our broad support for, the recent signing of the Canada-Korea free trade agreement.

Can the government please inform the House of the timeline for tabling the full details of the agreement.

Infrastructure February 26th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the only infrastructure these guys seem to have invested in is the lunch delivery infrastructure of the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesdays.

We are starting to see that the Prime Minister has a habit of not following through on his promises, so let us take a look at what he does do.

While the mayors of Canada's biggest cities are in Ottawa today, will the Prime Minister explain why he is making cuts to the infrastructure funding our cities so desperately need?
