Statements in the House

Women and Gender Equality September 17th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, it is a bit rich to hear a member of the Conservative Party pretend to care about feminism, when their own leader was using misogynistic hashtags on videos to attract men who hate women.

It was anything but feminist when the Conservatives brought forward backdoor legislation to ban abortion and to take away a woman's right to choose, or when they all voted against increased funding to combat gender-based violence or support survivors. Their leader does not care about women or equality; he cares only about himself.

Mr. Speaker, I think every single Canadian and every single member of the House condemns anti-Semitism.

We know that combatting anti-Semitism and hate takes concrete action. That is why in this particular budget we are investing $273 million toward Canada's first-ever action plan on combatting hate. We have also invested more than $200 million toward Canada's anti-racism strategy. We have launched a community resiliency fund. We are working with the Minister of Public Safety. We are going to continue to do everything possible to make sure we combat hate in this country and around the world.

Persons With Disabilities June 12th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, for the first time in Canadian history, we have a federal disability benefit that is going to strengthen the financial security of more than 600,000 persons with disabilities. The initial investment of $6.1 billion in budget 2024 is the next step to get this benefit out to Canadians.

We know that there is more to do. We are committed to doing this work alongside provinces and territories to make sure that there are no clawbacks. We are committed to this, and we are going to get it done.

Persons With Disabilities June 4th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the Canada disability benefit is a major milestone in our strong and unwavering commitment to creating a more inclusive and more fair Canada.

Through this budget, we have committed over $6.1 billion as the initial investment for the Canada disability benefit. This is the first-ever federal benefit designed for persons with disabilities. We know there is more to do, but we will continue to work with provinces and territories, first, to make sure that there are no clawbacks and to see what more we can do to support individuals with disabilities, now and into the future.

Mr. Speaker, we know that the local authorities are engaged in their jurisdictions on this matter. On this side of the House, we will always protect the charter-guaranteed right to freedom of speech and expression, but it must not cross the line into hate and intimidation.

At times like this, as a government, we are going to continue to do everything that we can to combat hate and to bring people together.

Mr. Speaker, when the Leader of the Opposition decided to cozy up to far right extremist supporters, that was unbecoming of an elected official, much less the leader of a major Canadian political party. Canadians expect their leaders to stand up for Canadian values. That is why we are investing $270 million in the budget for Canada's first-ever action plan on combatting hate. That is leadership.

Diversity and Inclusion May 2nd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, combatting hate is a responsibility of everyone in this House. Anything otherwise is shameful and, frankly, appalling. When the Leader of the Opposition decided to cozy up to far right extremist supporters, that was unbecoming of an elected official, much less the leader of a major political—

This is the next step in the journey for the Canada disability benefit, not the destination.

Diversity and Inclusion April 30th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, as a government, we have been very deliberate about choices to be inclusive, while the Leader of the Opposition is making a very deliberate choice in courting far right extremists. This is extremely reckless, and it is dangerous. He owes Canadians an apology, and he needs to denounce the cozying up that he is doing with these groups.

Mr. Speaker, while we are investing $273 million toward Canada's first-ever action plan on combatting hate in the budget, the leader of the official opposition is encouraging hate as he cozies up to far right white extremist supporters—
