Agreement concerning Annual Reports on Human Rights and Free Trade between Canada and the Republic of Colombia May 31st, 2010

Mr. Speaker, with leave of the House and pursuant to Standing Order 32(2), I would like to table, in both official languages, the treaty entitled “Agreement concerning Annual Reports on Human Rights and Free Trade between Canada and the Republic of Colombia”, signed in Bogota on May 27, 2010.

The agreement is tabled pursuant to the government's policy on the tabling of treaties before Parliament and is therefore subject to a period of 21 sitting days for examination. However, if during that time the House proceeds to a vote on a bill that refers to the agreement, the vote will be deemed as having fulfilled and respected the requirements concerning the examination.

Mr. Speaker, our government condemns last Friday's barbaric attacks on worshippers at two mosques in Lahore. We are urging Pakistani authorities to ensure equal rights for members of minority communities. We will continue to work with Pakistan and our allies to bring peace and stability to that country.

Additionally, my colleague from Edmonton—Sherwood Park will be putting forward a motion to the House officially condemning these acts. Our government actively works with countries around the world to promote freedom, democracy, the rule of law and particularly religious freedom.

Mr. Speaker, I think it is important to note that the parties that have already signed the treaty, specifically Iran, must comply fully and completely with existing International Atomic Energy Agency treaties.

Mr. Speaker, for the benefit of my colleague, I would like to remind members of the House that Mr. Khadr has been accused and the allegations against him include the tragic death of an American soldier. The American government is in charge of this file and the Americans will conduct the legal proceedings.

Human Rights May 27th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, Canada has clearly spoken out against human rights violations on the basis of sexual orientation, both at home, as well as around the world. We strongly condemn the blatant violation of human rights, and of the promotion of freedom and the rule of law. Democracy is an integral part, as we know, of our foreign policy. Canada will continue to encourage its partners, including Malawi, to respect human rights and ensure equal protection under the law without discrimination.

Mr. Speaker, Canadians can be very proud of our swift response and unwaivering commitment in the face of the North Korean aggression and our help to our friends and allies in South Korea.

We condemn North Korea's blatant disregard and egregious violations of international law. We will take steps to impose enhanced restriction on trade investment and other bilateral relations with the regime, including the addition of North Korea to the area control list.

Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on Air Transport May 14th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, with leave of the House and pursuant to Standing Order 32, I would like to table, in both official languages, the treaty entitled “Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on air transport” signed in Montreal on September 28, 2004.

Mr. Speaker, I also table, in both official languages, the free trade agreement between Canada and the Republic of Panama, done in Ottawa today in Ottawa, May 14, the agreement on the environment between Canada and the Republic of Panama, done in Ottawa on May 13, and the agreement on labour co-operation between Canada and the Republic of Panama done in Ottawa, done in Ottawa on May 13.
