Statements in the House

Justice November 24th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, as we know, Mr. Khadr faces very serious charges. The Government of Canada has sought and received assurances that Mr. Khadr is being treated humanely. Departmental officials, as a matter of fact, have carried out several welfare visits with Mr. Khadr and will continue to do so.

However, any questions regarding whether Canada plans to ask for the release of Mr. Khadr from Guantanamo are premature and speculative in nature as the legal process and appeals are ongoing.

Transportation June 18th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, I have told the Bloc and the members many times but, as usual, they do not listen. I spoke directly with those affected, the inhabitants of the Magdalen Islands. I clearly told them that, next winter, there will be a pilot program leading to other measures to be announced later.

However, I wish to vigorously denounce the Bloc Québécois' support for the idea of reducing Quebec's dependence on carbon by 50%, just as the Liberals—

International Trade June 12th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, this is yet another example of the success of our government's robust trade program, which saw us sign a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association at the beginning of the year, thus opening the doors for us to the European Union.

The benefits include many joint ventures, such as strengthening cooperation in various fields, including science and technology, and developing small- and medium-sized businesses.

We have taken an important step that will make it possible to further liberalize and open up trade and investments abroad, particularly in France.

Marine and Rail Transportation June 9th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, I thank my hon. colleague for her question.

This gives me an opportunity to remind the House that the Government of Canada, this government, contributed $350 million to Quebec's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat the adverse effects of pollution. When worthwhile projects are put forward, we look at them and, if there are coordinated efforts, we implement the projects in such a way as to ensure that everyone stands to gain.

The Economy June 6th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, despite the global economic turbulence, Canada's employment picture remains strong. Pre-emptive tax cuts are helping shield Canada from economic turbulence.

In May, 8,400 net new jobs were created with strong gains in the Ontario and Quebec manufacturing sectors. Three-quarters of a million net new jobs were created since we came to office. Unemployment is near a 33 year low. It is time for the Liberal Party to show confidence in our accomplishments.

The Economy June 6th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, basically, Canada is faced with two different scenarios: the scenario we are proposing and the devastating scenario of economic instability proposed by the Liberals. The Liberals of course want to raise taxes, as we all know, through a carbon tax. They also want to raise the GST, which was just lowered.

No, anyone who knows what they are talking about when it comes to the Canadian economy and the global economy knows that we are on the right track.

The Economy June 6th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, once again, our economic fundamentals remain solid. The financial position of households and businesses is sound. Our budget is balanced. Debt is going down. We are focused on controlling government spending. Our labour market remains strong. More than 130,000 new jobs have been created in the first four months of this year. We are getting the job done.

Economic Development June 6th, 2008

I know the truth hurts.

Further on, it says, “Employment in Quebec's manufacturing industry increased in May”. What can I say—

Economic Development June 6th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, unfortunately I have to cite the document. In the section entitled, “Employment gains in Quebec” it says: “In Quebec, ... employment rose by 18,000 in May. With an increase in the number of Quebecers in the labour market...” Further on—

Economic Development June 6th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, I am particularly pleased that the hon. member mentioned Quebec's economy. She probably missed it, but, this morning, statistics show that in the month of May, the Canadian economy created 18,000 new jobs in Quebec. It is odd that the Bloc Québécois has not said a word about that.

And, do they know where those 18,000 jobs were created? In the manufacturing industry. That means that my colleague, the hon. Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, is doing a good job.
