Statements in the House

Tamil Heritage Month January 29th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, as the month of January comes to an end, I want to take a moment to recognize Tamil Heritage Month.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Hindu temple in my riding to celebrate Thai Pongal. I want to thank the president of the Senior Tamils' Centre, Pari Srikanthan, for inviting me and Henry Soosaipillai for accompanying me. In keeping with the theme of “Tamilicious: Tamil Food”, we celebrated Thai Pongal.

We honour the vibrant and invaluable contributions Tamil Canadians have made to our country. We also recognize that Tamils faced discrimination and persecution, and many came to Canada to escape this. Today, the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia, is a day that reminds us of this.

Let us build a Canada where all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, feel they belong. Let us all fight discrimination and hate to keep Canada the inclusive and welcoming nation we are proud to call home.

Committees of the House December 15th, 2023

Madam Speaker, on a point of order, I was told my comment was not relevant. I do not know what the relevance of this is to the question I asked.

Committees of the House December 15th, 2023

Madam Speaker, I am glad the member opposite mentioned being out of touch. In his rather freewheeling remarks on the motion before us, he referred to me as not being able to represent my constituents because of my personal situation.

I am wondering if he might explain to me how the 83% of members opposite are able to represent the over 50% of people in their ridings who are women when they are all men.

Committees of the House December 15th, 2023

Madam Speaker, that the member opposite can talk about my personal financial situation—

Committees of the House December 15th, 2023

Madam Speaker, I do not know how anything about me personally, which he does not even know about, has any relevance to the motion or to what we are talking about—

Committees of the House December 15th, 2023

Madam Speaker, on a point of order, I believe we are talking about the concurrence motion. I am just wondering about the relevance of what the member opposite is saying, to the merger of HSBC and the Royal Bank of Canada.

Speaker of the House of Commons December 15th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, I have a question regarding the pattern we are seeing, as the member opposite mentioned. Not accepting the results of the procedures of the House seems to be a pattern the opposition is following. I wanted to refer back to what happened with Bill C-234 with the bullying of senators and the attempt to push something through, which had already followed proper procedure.

Here again we see the procedures of our House, which have always been used and have resulted in the will of this place, and the Conservatives once again are getting up and trying to override that. Can the member please give me his opinion on why this is happening and how it is relevant?

Indigenous Affairs December 15th, 2023

Madam Speaker, on a point of order, I just wanted to point out that I was in the committee meeting that the member opposite referred to when he stood. What he said was, in fact, factually incorrect—

Diversity and Inclusion December 12th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, we know governments that have strong representation by women and strong women leaders invest more in people.

Just last week we saw the Conservative Party, which has a caucus that is only 17% women and lacks diverse representation, oppose program after program that invests in Canadians. In fact, Conservatives voted 120 times “no” to investing in Canadians.

Could the President of the Treasury Board share with us how the reckless Conservatives would have greatly hurt the very Canadians we are working so hard to support?

Supplementary Estimates (B), 2023-24 December 8th, 2023

Madam Speaker, as we have been here for hours, ensuring that we are fighting for Canadians and making sure that we keep fighting against climate change, we certainly want a recorded division on this vote.
