Statements in the House

Business of Supply May 7th, 2014

Mr. Chair, on the topic of profit or loss in the operations of Canada Post, as I said, I have in front of me the annual report. It indicates that while there was a profit in operations in 2009 and 2010, there was not in 2011, 2012, or 2013. There was a loss of $226 million in 2011, $106 million in 2012, and $193 million in 2013 from operations.

Business of Supply May 7th, 2014

Mr. Chair, I have the corporate plan for Canada Post, but of course, Canada Post is an independent crown corporation and as a third party, is arm's length from us.

We do know that since 2006, there have been 1.2 billion fewer pieces of domestic letter mail delivered. That is why Canada Post has embarked upon this change.

If the member would like to have further information with respect to profitability, we can provide those back years. However, I can tell the member that with respect to this year, Canada Post in 2013 had a loss of $269 million—

Air Transportation May 6th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, on the topic of airline safety, I am glad the member brought up the fact that our Canadian pilots and airlines do follow all the rules that they are supposed to be following. They are there to protect the safety of the passengers, as well as the communities underneath them.

I will find out the information for the hon. member and I will refer back to him when I have that from my department.

Transport May 6th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, what the government has done is ensure that there is going to be growth in trade, there is going to be growth in jobs, and there is going to be growth in economic prosperity in the member's region. He should be grateful to the government for doing what we are doing in order to ensure that our trade continues to foster.

We have not only talked about, specifically, what we plan to do, we have committed to that in the budget this year. We will continue to move forward on this project and we will get it done.

Air Transportation May 5th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, I appreciate the question from the hon. member. I will take it up with him outside the House to ensure that I have the right airport that we are talking about. The airport capital assistance program is in place, and indeed it helps many airports locally in our country with respect to safety and security measures.

Quebec Bridge May 5th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, since 1995, CN has owned this bridge and has been responsible for the operation, the maintenance, and the upkeep. Both the federal government and the provincial government at the time put maintenance money into a pot. Of that portion, the federal government indicated it expected the bridge to be painted. It was not painted to the satisfaction of the government. As such, we commenced action in 2006 and we commenced trial today. We look forward to the outcome of this endeavour.

Transport May 5th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, yes, he should be ashamed of himself.

I appreciate the question from the hon. member. Indeed, we have embarked as a government on an ambitious agenda to ensure that we are putting in the hands of local communities those assets which are better managed locally. We have not gotten to the end of the process with respect to Sydney Harbour, but when that process is completed, I am sure he will hear about it from Mayor Cecil Clarke.

Air Transportation May 1st, 2014

Mr. Speaker, as the Mirabel Airport is the property of Transport Canada, it is under a long-term lease with the Aéroports de Montréal, which has responsibility for all of its operations and indeed the land-use planning associated with it. Nothing that is being carried out today is in contravention of the terms of its lease, and we look forward to seeing what developments the Aéroports de Montréal will be taking in that area to improve and continue to develop the economy in the great portion of Montreal.

Canada Post May 1st, 2014

Mr. Speaker, as members know, Canada Post has embarked upon a five-point plan to ensure that it returns to self-sufficiency and is not a burden on the taxpayer here in Canada. More importantly as well, it is charged with ensuring that the rural moratorium stay in place, and indeed it does. Those are protected communities in which these services will not be suspended. Indeed, it is our government that put that in place and gave it some teeth, and it is a very important part of our policy. Finally, I would say when we look at the amount of service that is provided, it is important to note that in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador there are more Canada Post outlets than there are schools.
