International Co-operation March 19th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, Canadians can be proud of the results that their hard-earned tax dollars are achieving abroad. Canada's investments are providing food, health care and emergency humanitarian assistance to those who need it most.

We will continue to reassure Canadians that their money and their taxes are being spent in such a way as to obtain the best possible results.

Canadians deserve no less.

Violence Against Women March 8th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, our government is taking action to eliminate gender-based violence. Gender-based violence is not just a women's issue; it is an issue that affects all Canadians.

That is why Canada's International Women's Day theme this year is, “Working Together: Engaging Men to End Violence against Women”.

That is why we are supporting the Ending Violence Association of British Columbia and the BC Lions Football Club in their efforts to reduce violence against women and girls by encouraging men and boys to be more than bystanders.

This project engages football teams and coaches to help provide youth with the practical tools required to break the silence on violence against women and girls. It is through projects like this that our government will continue to make women and girls safer.

Business of Supply February 26th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, one of the things this government did was make the gas tax funding permanent in our budget. Municipalities across Canada can now count on that money and know exactly how they can plan for their capital expenditures. I wonder if the parliamentary secretary could speak to how this is creating jobs and long-term planning opportunities for our municipalities.

International Co-operation February 8th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, the federal government will continue to provide international assistance on behalf of all Canadians.

All Canadians, including Quebeckers, have consistently donated generously to causes they believe in and to help those less fortunate.

Under our government, Canada's aid investments are achieving results in food security, in maternal and child health, and in education. Canada will continue to assist those most vulnerable.

International Co-operation February 8th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, Canada has a very long history of support for the people of Mali. In fact, the ambassador of Mali called Canada's assistance exemplary.

We remain concerned with the situation in Mali. That is why the minister announced additional support for Mali, in the form of humanitarian assistance, emergency health care, access to water and food for displaced people and refugees.

Aurora February 8th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, there is a great deal of excitement these days in the town of Aurora, a vibrant community in my riding located in the heart of York region. Aurora, a town that uniquely blends an urban sophistication with the charm of its rural roots, is celebrating its 150th birthday.

On February 3, the anniversary date of the town's inauguration, I and hundreds of proud residents kicked off the celebration at the mayor's sesquicentennial levee. Rich in culture and steeped in heritage, residents are passionate about remembering and preserving the history of their beloved town. Indeed, with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers, Aurora will be marking each season in 2013 with a celebratory event to acknowledge its past, present and future.

I invite all Canadians to visit the town of Aurora this year and join the celebration.

Business of Supply February 7th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I wonder if the hon. member could comment on what government it was that brought this office into being and what was the position of the opposition at the time it was voted on?

Conflict in Mali February 5th, 2013

Mr. Chair, my colleague talked about textbooks being given to Mali in order for school children to have opportunities. It is very personal for me because for the last 10 years my family has supported a little girl in Mali through World Vision. Her name is Tolatta Togo. Tolatta has the opportunity to go to school.

Could my colleague comment on how Canada's contribution will help girls like Tolatta to get an education?

Conflict in Mali February 5th, 2013

Mr. Chair, my colleague mentioned that on January 31 we had Kerry Buck at the committee. One of the things that she said was that:

—current projects in West Africa include military training with Niger on armed forces in the context of exercise Flintlock, provision of training by police, and regional training projects for law enforcement and border security through Interpol.

I wonder if my colleague would like to comment on that?

Conflict in Mali February 5th, 2013

Mr. Chair, I do not think the opposition likes to take no for an answer, or yes for an answer for that matter.

The $13 million is new money. The minister announced that money in Addis Ababa. It is new money.

It is the government-to-government direct money that has been suspended. We are still working with our NGOs, humanitarian partners, multilateral partners on the ground, and will continue to do so.
