Statements in the House

Petitions December 15th, 2021

Madam Speaker, I rise to table a petition also in support of Bill S-223.

This bill seeks to combat forced organ harvesting and trafficking. It would make it a criminal offence for a person to go abroad and receive an organ taken without the consent of the person giving the organ. This bill has passed in the Senate unanimously three times, and MPs from multiple parties have been putting forward a form of this bill for over 13 years. This bill passed unanimously in the House of Commons in 2019 in exactly the same form. Petitioners hope that this Parliament is the one that finally gets this done.

Foreign Affairs December 10th, 2021

Madam Speaker, in October 2020, the government stated that it does not directly or indirectly provide funds to the Union of Agricultural Work Committees, an NGO linked to the Canadian-designated terrorist organization the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. This past October, Israel declared the UAWC a terrorist organization. In November, NGO Monitor reported that the UAWC is, in fact, receiving Canadian tax dollars.

I have a very serious question. Why are the Liberals funding terrorists?

Business of Supply December 9th, 2021

Madam Speaker, the proposal is 15% of those 37,000 buildings. That is roughly equivalent to 5,500 buildings, if we look at it that way. Of course, they would not all be in the same area, but that is roughly what we are talking about. We are not saying the federal government should just give them away. It could sell these buildings and potentially raise hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars, which it could leverage into a forward-looking new housing policy. Would my hon. friend not agree that it would be a win-win in this regard?

Winnipeg Blue Bombers December 9th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, I rise in the House today to proudly congratulate the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on their nail-biting victory against the Saskatchewan Roughriders just this past weekend.

Our shared pride of the CFL never fails to bring excitement for the whole family to enjoy. Whether fans are watching from their television at home or cheering on the Bombers in person at the IG Field, this season has truly been one for the history books. No team scored more points than the Bombers. No team turned the ball over less or forced more giveaways than the Bombers. No team's margin of victory was consistently well into the double digits the way the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' was.

I call on every member of the House to join me in wishing the best of luck to our team in blue as it faces the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for the coveted Grey Cup this coming Sunday. I hope Hamilton is ready; I know we are.

Go, Bombers, go.

Business of Supply December 9th, 2021

Madam Speaker, the member opposite and her colleagues love to brag about their housing program. However, on August 10, four days before the call of the unnecessary election, the Parliamentary Budget Officer himself, Mr. Giroux, in his report entitled “Federal Program Spending on Housing Affordability in 2021” commented on the federal government's program. He said the program is having a limited impact.

Why is the Parliamentary Budget Officer calling this program such a failure, when the Liberals love to brag about it so much?

Business of Supply December 7th, 2021

Madam Chair, he is an excellent appointment, but the minister did not answer the question. Has the envoy received any resources, funds, offices or support staff from the Government of Canada?

Business of Supply December 7th, 2021

Madam Chair, I hate to inform the minister again, but it is not happening. She should follow up with her contacts and make sure it is.

I want to ask about the appointment of the honourable Irwin Cotler as Canada’s special envoy on preserving Holocaust remembrance and combatting anti-Semitism.

What specific government resources have been allocated to the envoy to ensure that he can fulfill his mandate, which was recently renewed?

Business of Supply December 7th, 2021

Madam Chair, it is clear that the minister is not getting neutrality. In fact, I wish the government would do what the EU is doing and put its money where its mouth is.

In September, because of these very concerns about the school materials, the European Union made its UNRWA funding conditional on immediate changes to the Palestinian school curriculum to promote coexistence with Israel. If such changes are not made by early 2022, EU funds will go to NGOs that promote coexistence. Canada could have been a leader on this.

Will the minister's government follow the European Union's lead?

Business of Supply December 7th, 2021

Madam Chair, the minister surely must be aware of what she is saying, because the school materials are teaching these young, vulnerable Palestinian children how to hate Jews.

Will Canada stop providing dollars to UNRWA, given that these materials literally teach young Palestinian children to be anti-Semites?

Business of Supply December 7th, 2021

Madam Chair, I look forward to that clarification and I hope the Canadian government will follow suit and also declare the UAWC a terrorist organization.

I want to ask about UNRWA. Canada gives tens of millions of dollars to UNRWA. In January, IMPACT-se issued a report confirming that UNRWA was providing anti-Semitic school materials to young Palestinian students. The minister said at the time that she asked her officials to investigate how this happened.

What was the outcome of this investigation, and will a report be tabled?
