Statements in the House

Automotive Industry December 14th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, this is precisely why I was in Washington, D.C., working with the American government and working with congressional leaders to make the case for Canada. The Deputy Prime Minister and I just released a letter last week to the congressional leadership indicating that we would stand up and introduce retaliatory measures should we need to do that.

Members have seen this government work. When we were faced with section 232 tariffs, we stood up for Canadian jobs. We will always stand up for Canadian jobs.

Automotive Industry December 14th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, we have made it very clear to the Americans that the protectionist and discriminatory provisions for electric vehicle credits are discriminatory to Canada. We have been building automobiles together for 50 years and integrating our supply chains for over 50 years, and Canada will be prepared to stand up for its national interest.

We want to work towards a solution. We are working very hard at that. Canada will stand up for its interest. Canadians have seen this government do it, and it will do it again.

Natural Resources December 14th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, I take exception to the way the hon. member has framed this. I am perfectly happy to stand up in this House and respond to questions raised.

I will always stand up for Canadian industries. I will stand up for Canadian workers. Every single day, that is what we do on this side of the House, and we have been successful.

International Trade December 13th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 32(2) and in accordance with the enhanced transparency requirements set out in the amended policy on tabling of treaties in Parliament, I am pleased to notify the House of Commons of the government's intent to initiate negotiations for a Canada-United Kingdom free trade agreement. The Government of Canada intends to commence negotiations by holding a first round of negotiations with the United Kingdom no earlier than 90 days from the date of this notice.

The Economy December 13th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank the CFIB for their collaboration, co-operation and engagement throughout the entire pandemic. Their voices throughout this very difficult time have helped us create the very emergency support programs that have helped businesses. Countless businesses have told all of us, even those across the aisle, that the support programs have to stay in place so they can get through this vulnerable time of the pandemic.

The Economy December 13th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank the hon. member for that really important question, particularly because it is about the small businesses and entrepreneurs in our country, who are really the backbone of the Canadian economy.

We have had their backs throughout the entire pandemic. It has been really important that they get small business loan support and get support to keep people on the payroll and pay the bills and rent. This is the kind of work we have been doing.

We have always had the backs of small businesses, and we will always have the backs of small businesses in Canada.

Small Business December 10th, 2021

Madam Speaker, farm families are absolutely at the very heart of all of our communities across the country. Supporting them, particularly through this very difficult time of the pandemic, has been a top priority for the government. We are going to continue to support farm families all across this country.

I thank my hon. colleague for raising this very important issue.

Small Business December 7th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague and congratulate him on his re-election.

Black business owners make important contributions to the Canadian economy. Their success is a priority. A total of $10.7 million has already been distributed to support Black entrepreneurs in Montreal, like those in Bourassa, through the Black entrepreneurship program's national ecosystem fund.

I look forward to sharing some news about other successful projects in the near future.

Automobile Industry December 6th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, just a few days ago, I returned, along with colleagues on all sides of the House, to advocate in the U.S. on this issue, standing up for Canadian workers, standing up for Canadian businesses. This work continues.

I want to thank all my colleagues on all sides of the House for this advocacy. Over 50 meetings took place. We are going to continue to do this really important work for our workers and for our businesses.

Public Safety December 6th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, our government will continue to ensure the security of Canada's networks, and Canadians can be assured that we will not compromise on matters of national security. As we have clearly indicated, our approach will take into account important domestic and international considerations, and we will make the best possible decision for Canadians.
