COVID-19 Emergency Response December 8th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for his question.

We announced that businesses may be eligible for a second loan of $20,000 under the Canada emergency business account. We will continue to support our small businesses and help them deal with the pandemic by extending the wage subsidy and by supporting SMEs with our new commercial rent assistance program. We will continue to support businesses in Glengarry—Prescott—Russell.

Madam Speaker, our absolute priority is to provide predictability and stability for Canadian businesses that export to the United Kingdom. We are very pleased that we have reached a successful transition continuity agreement with the United Kingdom. This will largely preserve the terms of CETA, which was an ambitious agreement with a 98% reduction in tariffs, protection for Canada's supply managed products, and the maintenance of our high standards for consumers, workers and the environment.

I look forward to getting support from members on all sides of the House, so we can provide this predictability and stability for Canadian businesses.

International Trade December 1st, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I can assure the hon. member that our government is actively working on how to mitigate the impact of any implementation delays so that businesses can indeed rely on the continuity that they need. It is excellent that we have worked with the United Kingdom to come to this continuity agreement, so that there is that predictability and stability for Canadian businesses. I would like to work with all colleagues on all sides of the House to ensure that we take this agreement in a timely way through the parliamentary process.

International Trade December 1st, 2020

Mr. Speaker, our priority is to provide predictability and stability for Canadian businesses that trade with the U.K. Now that we have concluded the negotiations, the next step is for the agreement to be ready for signing by Canada and the U.K.

For Canada, this means tabling in the House of Commons, for debate and parliamentary scrutiny, in accordance with established practices.

I look forward to working with colleagues from all sides of the House to support the timely parliamentary approval of this TCA, and our government is actively working on how to mitigate the impact of any implementation delay so that businesses can rely on the continuity that they need.

International Trade November 30th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I absolutely agree with the hon. member that the work he and all colleagues do is extremely important. That is why I want to thank the officials here in Canada and the United Kingdom for all of their hard work. I know they are working as fast as they can to make sure they get the review completed.

The continuity trade agreement with Canada and the U.K. does this: It provides predictability and stability, and this is what businesses are looking for, particularly during this time. Our economic recovery counts on the stability in this important trading relationship with the United Kingdom.

International Trade November 30th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, it was really good to be at the trade committee today. As I said, our officials are working very hard to get the legal text finalized so we can indeed share it.

I will respect our processes and the work of my colleagues on all sides of the House, and will endeavour to get this information to them as soon as it is available and ready. I think the continuity agreement is really great for Canadian businesses, because it provides the continuity and predictability that our businesses are looking for in trading with the United Kingdom.

Social Development November 26th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, Black entrepreneurs contribute significantly to our communities and our Canadian economy.

This week, I announced the launch of two of the three pillars of this unprecedented program. The call for proposals has been launched.

We recognize that systemic racism exists in the business world and that we must combat it. We are proud to implement this important program.

International Trade November 24th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, we all agree that trade needs to represent the values and interests of Canadians, and let me be clear about what those values are. We believe human rights are at the very core of our international policy. We believe the economy and the environment can go hand in hand and are mutually beneficial. We believe that everyone should benefit from trade, including women, LGBTQ2 businesses and indigenous peoples.

I can assure my hon. colleague and all Canadians that our trade policy will always be motivated by what is in the interests of Canadians.

Regional Economic Development November 20th, 2020

Madam Speaker, COVID-19 is affecting all Canadians and is having a significant impact on female entrepreneurs. To address that reality, we are committed to advancing women's economic independence.

We provided an additional $15 million to support women through the women entrepreneurship strategy. The independence of female entrepreneurs is a priority, and we know that when women succeed, everyone succeeds.
