Statements in the House

Committees of the House March 31st, 2010

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to table, in both official languages, the first report of the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities on its study of Bill C-310 concerning the air passengers' bill of rights.

The committee recommends that the House does not further proceed with the bill.

Brandon University March 29th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, on Friday, March 19, I had the pleasure of welcoming the Prime Minister of Canada to Brandon, Manitoba. The Prime Minister announced our government's financial commitment for a new Brandon University healthy living centre. The centre will host gymnasiums and indoor track, training and treatment services, as well as a facility for fitness classes. Highly efficient, the building will use sustainable and recycled materials earning it “Certified LEED Silver” and both students and residents will have access to the health centre.

The announcement fulfills the dreams of so many who have poured countless time, effort and donations into this new facility and will now permit them to accomplish their goal in realizing a healthy living centre for Brandon University and all of western Manitoba.

We are fortunate to have a Prime Minister and a government that understands that strong communities mean strong provinces and a strong country. For that, I thank the Prime Minister on behalf of the people of Brandon—Souris. For Brandon University, I say, “Let's get it done. Go Bobcats”.

THE BUDGET March 9th, 2010

Madam Speaker, I listened to my hon. colleague, for whom I have a great deal of respect. He is very passionate about how he speaks. However, I will remind him, and I will remind my hon. colleague across the floor from Transcona who sat in a provincial legislature, that in 1995 the federal Liberal government gutted health care and post-secondary education. As a member of government of that day, many people suffered.

How would the member reconcile what happened then to what has happened today?

The Budget March 9th, 2010

Madam Speaker, I appreciate the comments the member has made. There is a real contrast between what the government is saying and what the opposition is saying on this budget. Many of them are talking about raising Canadians' taxes and spending more money.

I would ask the member for Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar to tell us what the differences are between the government of today and the Liberal Party of tomorrow.

Mac Robinson Community Centre December 8th, 2009

Madam Speaker, on October 10, I had the pleasure of participating in the grand opening of the Mac Robinson Community Centre in Cartwright, Manitoba.

Mac lived his entire life in Cartwright, where he earned the reputation as the on-call guy, as he was always available to help anyone in need. His reputation for impeccable workmanship placed him in high regard in Cartwright and the surrounding communities.

Mac's many contributions to the community include involvement in the curling club, Kinsmen Club and countless boards, as well as being a volunteer firefighter and ambulance driver. Mac also worked diligently on the save our school committee to ensure that a school remained in Cartwright.

Supporting Mac throughout his remarkable life was his family, his wife Jean, and his children Greg, Jeff and Lindsay, for whom this arena will be a lasting memorial to their husband and father. I know without a doubt that the Mac Robinson Community Centre will be a constant reminder of the countless contributions this great man made to Cartwright and area.

Petitions December 8th, 2009

Mr. Speaker, as I have many times before, I am pleased to present petitions from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick today supporting the library book rate. It is calling on the government to support an act to amend the Canada Post Corporation Act with respect to library materials, which would protect and support the library book rate and extend it to audiovisual materials.

Public Service of Canada December 7th, 2009

Mr. Speaker, our nation has always been proud of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Historically the spouses of those who sacrificed their lives in both world wars as well as Korea were given priority placement in the public service. Can the President of the Treasury Board tell the House how we have updated this practice?

Petitions November 24th, 2009

Mr. Speaker, Canadians love to read and they love to share. Today I am proud to present petitions from Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick.

Canadians want equal access to information, regardless of their location, age or ability. Bill C-322, An Act to amend the Canada Post Corporation Act (library materials) would protect and support the library book rate and extend it to include audiovisual materials.
