Statements in the House

Petitions December 10th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, in the fourth petition the petitioners want to see mandatory side guards for trucks to protect cyclists and pedestrians from being pulled under the wheels of these vehicles.

Petitions December 10th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, the third petition is from a large group of folks from Toronto.

The petitioners strongly urge the Government of Canada to immediately legislate a ban on bulk oil tanker traffic off the B.C. northern coast. They are against the Enbridge northern gateway pipeline.

Petitions December 10th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, the second petition calls on Parliament to stand up for women's rights and stop honour killings in Pakistan.

Petitions December 10th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I have four petitions.

The first petition asks that the Parks Canada Agency, which is responsible for the operation of the Rideau Canal and the Trent-Severn Waterway, not reduce the hours of operation nor shorten the seasons of operation and to return service to 2011 levels.

Rail Transportation December 10th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, this holiday season many families will not be able to visit their loved ones by train. Belleville, Sarnia, Kitchener, Stratford and Cornwall are all losing service. The iconic route called Canadian between Toronto and Vancouver has been cut back. Communities feel they have been abandoned.

Where are the Conservative members from these communities? Why are they not speaking out? Why are Conservatives allowing VIA Rail to walk away from its mandate to provide service nationwide?

Rail Transportation December 6th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, 8 out of 10 rail freight customers feel that they are getting shoddy service and unacceptable prices. With radical downsizing at CP, services are expected to become less reliable and more expensive. Farmers, mining and forestry companies will hurt even more and our economy will suffer.

The minister keeps making promises while rail customers are getting fleeced. When will the minister finally take action and adopt my rail customer protection act?

Taxation December 5th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, federal institutions, like port authorities, are not paying their property taxes. Even the Supreme Court said that they must pay up. These tax dodgers are costing communities tens of millions of dollars. In Vancouver, the port authority owes $50 million to the good people of Vancouver. In Toronto, it is $58 million.

When will the minister enforce the law and order these laggards to pay up?

Air Transportation November 29th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, air travellers should be concerned when one out of three airlines is not inspected properly. Transport Canada is short 100 air safety inspectors because of draconian Conservative budget cuts.

At-risk airlines are supposed to be checked once a year, but that is just not done. As the holiday season is approaching, how can Canadians trust the Conservatives to keep them safe when the Auditor General has raised a red flag on air safety inspections?

Petitions November 28th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, the second petition is from a group of constituents of mine who are very worried that large trucks in big cities are causing cyclist and pedestrian fatalities. They want to see a regulation introduced under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act to make side guards for large trucks mandatory. That recommendation is supported by--

Petitions November 28th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I have two petitions. The first one is from residents in Oshawa who are upset that the Oshawa port authority has given permission to FarmTech Energy to build an ethanol plant in Oshawa harbour adjacent to a sensitive wetland that is home to species at risk and is a wildlife reserve and provincial park.

The petitioners are asking the Government of Canada to divest the federal port authority back to the City of Oshawa, to stop the construction of the ethanol facility and to complete the environmental assessment.
