Mr. Speaker, we are hearing some truly heartbreaking stories from athletes, including gymnasts. I stand in solidarity with those people every day.

Obviously, the sports community should be a place that is good for a person's mental and physical health. Every component of Canada's sports system needs to do better.

That is why I am continuing to work with all partners to ensure that everyone takes this situation seriously and that everyone is doing everything in their power to completely eradicate abuse and mistreatment in sports.

Mr. Speaker, I want to commend the courageous athletes who told their story and testified about the abuse they suffered in the sports system. I want them to know that I hear them, I see them and I believe them.

At the national level, we have created the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner, which can investigate cases of abuse, but also investigate the culture in certain sports.

What is more, I am working with my provincial and territorial colleagues to ensure that every athlete, no matter what level they are at in the sports system, whether it is at the local, provincial or national level, knows where to turn to report cases of abuse or mistreatment.

Mr. Speaker, I commend my colleague for her excellent work and for her question.

The government is listening to Canadians and it is working tirelessly to support them. For example, starting November 4, an estimated 11 million low- and modest-income current GST/HST credit recipients will receive an additional payment. We also introduced the Canada dental benefit, which will support families who need it, the Canada housing benefit top-up and other concrete measures.

The government is listening to the middle class, who are calling for action, and we will always do everything we can to support them.

Mr. Speaker, I thank my hon. colleague from Châteauguay—Lacolle for the great work she does. We want to see more girls and women participating in sports, but we also want to see more women coaches, women officials and women in leadership positions.

This investment is about making all levels of sport in Canada more inclusive and accessible. We know this will make a big difference in the Canadian sport system. As we have seen recently, women's place in sport is still being undermined, but we are here to change that.

Mr. Speaker, after hearing today's story about how the Conservatives are mobilizing an organization that promotes violence against women, it is a bit shameful the questions they are asking today.

Mr. Speaker, our government is taking all necessary steps to hold Hockey Canada's leadership to account. We have broadened the scope of the financial audit to 2016 so as to obtain all the necessary information, to be sure that no public funds were used to settle sexual assault cases.

We have also required Hockey Canada to become a signatory to the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner so that it can investigate the culture.

We will not back down. Hockey Canada must be held accountable for the sexual assaults within its organization.

Mr. Speaker, I would like to begin by acknowledging my parliamentary colleagues who have done an outstanding job with the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage and who have asked the right questions of Hockey Canada officials.

We expect voting members to ensure that there will be a permanent change in leadership at Hockey Canada and to ensure that changes are made to the culture of sport and sexual abuse once and for all.

Mr. Speaker, the stories we hear week after week about Hockey Canada are painful to say the least.

We get the impression that leadership at Hockey Canada is more interested in protecting its jobs than taking care of the safety of the public, women and its players. That is why I have suspended funding for Hockey Canada. We will reinstate it only when Hockey Canada becomes a member of the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner, which could investigate the matter.

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for her question and for the work she does on behalf of her constituents.

Our government is supporting national sport organizations so they can improve the rules of their sport, training protocols and behaviours with a view to reduce the risk of concussions.

Our government has invested $46.1 million, with more funding on the way, in research and initiatives to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of traumatic brain injuries, including concussions.

Mr. Speaker, as I said recently, there will be a financial audit to ensure that no public funds were used to cover up this story. Like all Canadians and like my colleague, I am horrified by what we heard yesterday, and we are going to ensure that Hockey Canada is held accountable for what happened.
