Statements in the House

Taxation March 7th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, we understand the work that brewers do in our country. Whether it is small craft brewers or the large producers, this is an important industry for our tourism sector but also for Canadians for recreational purposes.

We cannot comment on what is going to be in the budget. We have heard from the brewery industry and we are taking this matter under advisement.

Housing March 6th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, what are we hearing from the members opposite? Hopelessness. Useless words and facts that will not help Canadians. What we are not hearing from the members opposite is a plan. They have no plan for housing, no plan to fight climate change, no plan for the economy and no plan to make life more affordable.

Their team has no plan. Fortunately, we are over here on this side.

The Economy March 6th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for his question.

We have been very clear on this. We have spoken with the CEOs of grocery companies in this country. We have referred the matter to the Competition Bureau. My colleague, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, has been very clear on this matter.

When it comes to asking large corporations to do their fair share, we have the Canada dividend recovery, which makes sure that the banks and the insurance companies in this country pay their fair share. Profits in excess of $1 billion will be subject to additional tax.

We are making sure that Canadians can meet the affordability challenge they are facing. That is our job. We are on it.

Ethics February 16th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, let us dial the tape back. We had 10 years of economic stagnation under the Harper Conservatives, with not a year over 1% growth. Some 2.7 million people have been lifted out of poverty since we have been on this side. Two million more Canadians are working. What do the Conservatives have? They have nada, zip, zilch. They have no plan on climate change, no plan on affordability and no plan to grow the economy. We have a plan and we are delivering it. All they have are buzzwords and nonsense economics.

The Economy February 16th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, it must really be tough to be a Conservative these days. There is nothing so devastating for a Conservative than for the facts to get in the way of a good economic reality.

There were 150,000 new jobs in January alone, 326,000 new jobs since September and the lowest debt-to-GDP ratio in the world. We are on a path to grow this economy. Conservatives do not want to help Canadians; we do. That is our plan. We have one, and we are going to deliver.

The Economy February 16th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, I acknowledge the efforts of the NDP leader who worked with us on doubling the GST credit, as I acknowledge the support of the House for the one-time $500 top-up to the Canada housing benefit.

My colleagues in the House know very well that I cannot comment on the budget. What I can say is that we will be there for Canadians, as we have been in the past, and we will be there to build a strong economy that benefits everyone.

Taxation February 15th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the government is listening to small and medium-sized businesses. It is also listening to businesses that provide food to Canadians and feed our communities.

We will take the member's specific question, discuss this issue and provide a strong response.

Automotive Industry February 15th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank my friend and colleague, the MP for Vaughan—Woodbridge, for his hard work on the file.

Our auto-manufacturing sector is the centrepiece of the Canadian economy and a source of many well-paying Canadian jobs. Last year alone, we saw more than $15 billion invested in the EV and battery supply chain. Our government is working with auto manufacturers and labour organizations to ensure that the Canadian auto sector remains strong and competitive not only today, but for decades to come. We are putting hundreds of millions of dollars on the table to make sure that Canada is a leader in the production of electric vehicles built by Canadians and powered by Canadian critical minerals. This is good news for Canada and for Canadians.

Carbon Pricing February 15th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the hon. former critic for tourism, and every single Conservative member on that side of the House, ran on a plan to combat climate change. It seems there has been a change of management and now they do not believe in climate change. Guess what, they do not have a plan to address climate change. They do not have a plan to address affordability. They do not have a plan to help seniors. They do not have a plan to position this country for robust economic growth.

We raised 2.7 million people out of poverty, and 326,000 jobs were created since September. We have a plan; they do not. Thank goodness for Canadians.

The Economy February 15th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the Conservative opposition has had many opportunities in the House to vote with Canadians.

When we lowered taxes for the middle class, what did the Conservatives do three times? They voted against it. What did the Conservatives do when we introduced a $500 top-up to the housing benefit for Canadians? They voted against it. What did the Conservatives do when we gave more money to Canadian workers from coast to coast to coast? They voted against it.

We are taking action to ensure the well-being of Canadians, and they are voting against that.
