Mr. Speaker, it is always a very difficult decision when workers decide to go on strike, but this is a legal strike. The union recently overwhelmingly rejected the latest offer from the employer.

I encourage both parties to get back to the table as soon as possible to work out their differences.

Labour Relations December 2nd, 2009

Mr. Speaker, yes, I can confirm that we just received word from CN and Teamsters that they have signed an agreement.

If I do have any time left, I would like to thank the opposition labour critics and the opposition parties who worked very hard with the government to apply pressure to both sides to reach this agreement.

Labour December 1st, 2009

Mr. Speaker, as I said, as a government we are always hopeful that parties will come to a resolution without intervention.

When it comes to the museums strike, we continue to pressure both sides to come to a resolution. The public should know, though, that even though there is a strike ongoing at the museums, the museums are still open for visitors.

In terms of CN, this is a vital part of our transportation system and an integral part of our economy. If there is not a resolution, we must move forward with back to work legislation.

Mr. Speaker, it is always our hope that parties will come to a resolution and an agreement without any intervention.

Our mediator has been working with both of these parties since before the strike began and we will continue to pressure both sides to come to an agreement on their own.

Railway Continuation Act, 2009 November 30th, 2009

moved for leave to introduce Bill C-61, An Act to provide for the resumption and continuation of railway operations.

Labour November 30th, 2009

Mr. Speaker, as a government and as parliamentarians, it is incredibly important that we protect our economy. The union Teamsters decided to go on strike on Saturday and we cannot allow a major disruption in our transportation system. Therefore, we will introduce back to work legislation to end this strike.

We do continue to hope, though, that CN and the Teamsters can reach an agreement in the interim.

Mr. Speaker, as I have indicated, we have been working with both parties since before the strike began and, in fact, for quite some time. This is a very difficult situation for both parties. We encourage them to come back to the table as soon as possible to find a resolution.

As I indicated, I am prepared to appoint an arbitrator, but unfortunately at this time, neither of the parties will agree to that.

Mr. Speaker, in fact our mediator has been working with the parties since before the strike began. We will continue to encourage both sides to come to the table and find a resolution as soon as possible. I stand ready to appoint an arbitrator, but unfortunately at this time, neither of the parties agrees to that.

Museums November 5th, 2009

Mr. Speaker, we know this is a very difficult time and our thoughts are certainly with those affected by this situation, but this is a legal work stoppage, and it is important to note that the museums are open for visitors at this time.

A federal mediator has been working with the parties since before the strike even began. The mediator will continue working with those parties to find a solution.
