Mr. Speaker, the Iranian regime is widely considered to be the world's pre-eminent state sponsor of terrorism. This is why it is shocking that the Liberals are warming up relations with the government of Iran, which tortured and murdered Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi. Iranian-sponsored terrorist groups have murdered Canadian citizens, and the government of Iran has allowed multiple assaults on foreign embassies.

How can the Prime Minister justify normalizing relations with Iran to the victims of Iranian-sponsored terrorism?

Mr. Speaker, we were all horrified last night to learn of the increasingly desperate situation in Fort McMurray. Our thoughts are with the residents and the surrounding communities, and of course with the firefighters who are working so hard to put out these wildfires.

Could the Prime Minister please update all of us about what the Government of Canada's response will be to these wildfires?

Mr. Speaker, it is actually the job of the Prime Minister to try, at least try, to keep spending under control.

The facts are clear. The parliamentary budget officer and the finance department agree that Conservatives left the government a healthy surplus, and the Liberals have blown it.

Does the Prime Minister understand that this billions in spending actually has to be paid back?

Mr. Speaker, we have all heard of March madness.

Here is what the Liberals did in March, by their own budget numbers. They took the $7.5 billion surplus we left them, spent every dime of it, and then spent another $5 billion on top of that, in one month. It is reckless, it is irresponsible, and every Canadian is going to have to pay it back.

Does the Prime Minister understand that it is actually not his money to spend? It belongs to hard-working Canadians.

Mr. Speaker, while the Prime Minister was once again doing push-ups for the cameras yesterday, his Minister of Finance was doing some of his own verbal gymnastics back here.

He was trying to explain how a healthy Conservative surplus turned into a Liberal deficit. It turns out that we are just “stuck in this whole balanced budget thing”. He is right, and we are proud of it.

My question to the Prime Minister is simple. Is he actually ever planning to balance the budget?

Mr. Speaker, the Liberals are ignoring the facts and the truth. We now have confirmation that the Conservatives left a significant surplus.

Will the Prime Minister now admit that we left a surplus and that he is the only one responsible for our current financial mess?

Mr. Speaker, on Friday, when the finance minister was asked about the surplus that he clearly inherited from Conservatives, he said, “We don’t want to focus on this issue.” Of course he does not want to, when his own department, the independent parliamentary budget officer, and economists are telling him that now he is solely responsible for any deficit that Canadians will have to pay back.

How can Canadians trust the government to run the economy when its own finance minister will not admit basic facts?

Mr. Speaker, once again, the Prime Minister's own Department of Finance has confirmed that—drum roll, please—Conservatives left a healthy surplus for Canadians. It is undeniable fact, but, sadly, instead of following our lead of low taxes, balanced budgets, and job creation, the Prime Minister is raising taxes, spending recklessly, and has no plan to create jobs.

If the Prime Minister will not admit basic facts, how can we trust him to run our economy?

Mr. Speaker, during question period, the member for LaSalle—Émard—Verdun, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade, mentioned that our leader had spent funds on an international consultant on U.S. media.

The last time I checked, I am the leader. I did not do this. I know I am new, but the member has known me since he was elected. If he could please retract and withdraw that comment—

[Foreign Affairs, April 21st, 2016]

Mr. Speaker, yesterday we introduced a motion to recognize the atrocities that ISIL was committing as a genocide. By rejecting the motion, the Liberals have confirmed to the world their naive idea of the threat of ISIL, and they have let down Syrians and Iraqis who are being slaughtered, tortured, and raped.

We know ISIL is trying to wipe out entire cultural and religious communities, including Christians, Yazidis, and Shia Muslims. Therefore, for the Liberals to say that this is not a genocide is deeply unsettling. Why do the Liberals refuse to call this genocide what it is?
