Statements in the House

Aerospace Industry February 14th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, Canada has earned its reputation as a leader in space exploration.

In a report commissioned by our government, the Hon. David Emerson confirmed that the Canadian industry is well positioned to take advantage of emerging opportunities, succeed commercially and contribute to the public good. Our government plays a crucial role in the Canadian space sector, of which all Canadians are immensely proud.

Could the Minister of Industry update the House on the latest developments in the aerospace industry?

Fair Rail Freight Service Act February 4th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank the member for making such an eloquent speech.

Does he believe that rail services are essential services?

AOE Arts Council November 30th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I am very pleased to commemorate the silver jubilee of the AOE Arts Council.

The AOE Arts Council is one of the 300 dynamic community organizations in Ottawa—Orléans that I have the honour to represent in the House.

This organization has been successfully supporting, promoting and developing the arts scene in Ottawa for 25 years.

Executive director, Christine Tremblay, has been a catalyst in our community since the incorporation of AOE in 1987. The first recipient of the Order of Ottawa, she was instrumental in bringing the Shenkman Arts Centre to Orléans.

After 25 years at the helm of the AOE Arts Council, Ms. Tremblay is stepping down and will soon pass the torch to Micheline Joanisse.

Good luck with your new challenge, Micheline.

I also wish a happy anniversary to all the artists who are members of the AOE Arts Council and may these first 25 years be only the beginning of a great venture.

Before I sit down, I would like to thank the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and members from all corners of the House for their grace and good wishes over the last few weeks. I just want to reassure everyone, it was a big dig but they got it all.

Thank you very much.

Official Languages October 31st, 2012

Mr. Speaker, my message today is not scary.

The summit of the États généraux de la francophonie d'Ottawa will be held on November 17 and 18.

It will be held at the University of Ottawa's brand new social sciences building. The summit will cap off the extensive public consultation of this capital's citizenry.

The objective of the estates general is to identify the priorities of francophones and francophiles in Ottawa, to ensure that the language of Rabelais remains alive and well in our nation's capital.

Over the past year, the estates general team has hosted more than 30 cafés across the city to allow residents to express their views on various issues relating to Ottawa's French language and culture.

I was honoured to participate in several of these cafés. I invite all of my fellow citizens to the University of Ottawa on November 17 and 18 to dream of Ottawa. They can visit jereveottawa.ca.

National Philanthropy Day Act October 30th, 2012

Frankly, what we are about to witness is an extension of the charade. We heard a no, I admit it, but we heard a no from a stranger outside the House.

National Philanthropy Day Act October 30th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. I admit that I heard a no, but I did not hear a no from inside the House. I heard a no from a stranger outside the House. If you ask the people in the House now—

Jobs and Growth Act, 2012 October 29th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member and I both ran in 2008 against a carbon tax. The party that ran on the carbon tax was relegated to a reduced caucus in the opposition. They are now stuck in the third corner.

It is true that we talked about carbon trading with the United States. The United States would not trade. We cannot trade with ourselves, so that is the end of it.

Jobs and Growth Act, 2012 October 26th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, job creation is very important to this country. The fact is that the proof is in the pudding. Since the depth of the recession we have created over 820,000 new jobs.

Quite frankly, with respect to security measures, when people cross the border into Canada, I would approve any measure that brings more safety to our country and our citizens.

Jobs and Growth Act, 2012 October 26th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, Ottawa—Orléans is a pretty fortunate riding. We have one of the highest levels of income and education in Canada. People in Ottawa—Orléans like to do their part and get involved. My riding also has one of the highest rates of volunteerism.

In fact, I remember that a municipality in Alberta came to study how volunteering worked in my riding. In a few weeks, I will have the opportunity to present the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals. We received 487 applications and they were all valid. This shows just how involved everyone is.

Jobs and Growth Act, 2012 October 26th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, it is unfortunate that the hon. member is wasting his time making things up. What he should explain is his plan to impose a $21.5 billion carbon tax.

It is right there, on page 4 of their program, the program they fought on. That is why they are stuck there in the opposition. The program we fought on actually resulted in the budget that was approved in the House last June. That is where we are marching on.
