Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives promised 125,000 daycare spaces. After nine years in power, it is pretty easy to sum up the results. Not a single spot has been created—zero, zilch, nada.
While the Conservatives are proposing regressive income-splitting policies that are directed at a tiny fraction of Canadians, families are having a hard time making ends meet.
How does the government plan on helping families who are still waiting for a daycare spot?

Mr. Speaker, 25 years ago, the House unanimously adopted Ed Broadbent's motion to end child poverty by 2000. After 30 years of Liberal and Conservative governments, one in five children is still living in poverty. It is unacceptable that a rich country like Canada is leaving these children in such conditions.
What measures does the government intend to take to eliminate poverty in Canada?

Mr. Speaker, some 100 social groups are condemning the Conservatives' underhanded attack on refugee protection claimants.
Denying refugees social assistance based on their immigration status is like denying a lifeline to the most vulnerable members of our society. That is particularly true for those who do not immediately obtain a work visa.
Is the minister not ashamed of using a budget bill to backstab the most vulnerable members of our society?

Mr. Speaker, we expect the minister to give us answers, not ask questions.
This is urgent. The crisis in Syria is happening now. As we speak, millions of people, women, children and families are in an extremely precarious situation. We do not want to know how many Syrians arrived in Canada in 2011. We want to know what the minister is doing to bring refugees to Canada in 2014.
Apart from taking health care away from refugees, can the minister finally tell us very clearly how Canada will do its part to help the people of Syria?

Mr. Speaker, it is simply embarrassing to see how inadequate the Conservatives' response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria is. There are millions of refugees—millions—and the only thing the government will promise is to try to welcome just over a thousand of them. Even then it is not keeping its promise.
The minister needs to stop inflating the numbers by adding in the admissions allowed in 2011 and tell Canadians the truth.
Why have we accepted only 200 government-assisted refugees?

Mr. Speaker, let us take a look at the real figures.
Canada promised to accept 1,300 Syrians. That is really not enough in light of the millions of people in need. However, we are now learning that the minister knew last June that he would not even be able to honour this paltry commitment.
We asked dozens of questions about this, and the minister claimed that he would reach his target even though he knew it was not true.
Why did the minister mislead the House and why is he going back on his promise to the Syrian people?

Mr. Speaker, the facts are clear. A joint report by the Norwegian Refugee Council and the International Rescue Committee is clear: developed countries are not doing enough. Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq are at the end of their rope.
What is Canada doing? Not a whole lot. I remember a Canada that used to welcome refugees with open arms.
Will the government finally agree to help those in need?
