Statements in the House

Employment June 20th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, we are going to take strong steps in this program to protect Canadian employees across this country. We are going to make sure employers follow these procedures to make sure all Canadians have the first opportunity at any job.

Employment June 20th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the temporary foreign worker program is to make sure that employees are available when no Canadians are available for the jobs.

We are going to take strong steps to ensure that employers respect this program. We will bring in tough and stiff penalties for any employer who tries to abuse this program.

Mr. Speaker, the member will have to wait to see what changes are in store. The minister will make his announcement later on today.

Under the previous Liberal government—

Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada June 17th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal leader is at it again, this time with one of his senior supporters, Marc Emery, a convicted criminal and drug dealer.

Yes, Mr. Emery and his followers support the Liberal leader's irresponsible campaign to make it easier for children to gain access to and smoke marijuana, a campaign which continues.

This Conservative government wants to help prevent children from using drugs. The irresponsible Liberal plan to legalize and normalize marijuana, which includes the Liberal leader smoking it while holding public office, is dangerous to the health and well-being of Canadians, particularly our young children.

The Liberal leader needs to get his head out of the clouds. Listening to the advice of convicted criminals and drug dealers is probably not a good place to start.

Intergovernmental Relations June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the purpose of the temporary foreign worker program is to provide workers for employers who cannot find available Canadians in areas of acute labour shortage in certain regions and certain sectors.

The minister has already made several indications that he is going to make new announcements to tighten up this situation to ensure that all employers follow the rules and always offer the jobs to Canadians first before they approach temporary foreign workers.

Housing June 13th, 2014

It is the same question, Mr. Speaker, and it will receive the same answer. This is under the regulation and jurisdiction of the provincial level of government, so I would suggest that the member opposite take these concerns to the provincial government of Quebec.

Housing June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, as we have heard before, the regulations around pyrrhotite are controlled by the provincial level of government, so I would ask the member opposite to refer her questions to the Quebec government.

Social Development June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the SST and the government are committed to providing fair, credible, and impartial appeal processes in a timely manner to those people who apply. The SST is an independent administrative tribunal. It operates at arm's length from the department.

The department and the SST are now putting these legacy cases at the top of the priority list. We are going to clear up that backlog.

Social Development June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, I am not sure. We fixed a problem because we wanted to make sure that there was consistency among decisions from coast to coast to coast. Now, with the new Social Security Tribunal, we do have a case of backlogs that were left from the previous legacy tribunals. These are being cleared. As of April 1, 2014, these cases are now being heard. We are going to clear up the backlog.

Social Development June 13th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, as I said, the Social Security Tribunal is dealing with these legacy cases that were left over from previous tribunals. We have taken steps to ensure that we are aligned in this process from coast to coast to coast so we can have consistency in the decisions that are made.

However, when it comes to bungling and incompetence, why do the New Democrats not pay back the money they took from Canadian taxpayers to fund their campaign offices across the country and also for flyers sent to many ridings, illegally using taxpayer money for partisan purposes.
