Statements in the House

CBC/Radio-Canada March 9th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I find the question somewhat surprising from that member, who used to be a Liberal minister during the nineties when they cut almost $400 million from CBC. Aside from the hypocrisy, we in fact provide over $1 billion a year to the CBC, and we all know that there are some challenges in the media environment right now. The president has indicated that as well. We will continue, as I said before, to monitor the situation, but I am not going to respond to another question from a party that frankly does not deserve to ask a question about cuts.

Public Safety February 24th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, we take our country's two official languages seriously.

The proof is the roadmap for official languages, the most comprehensive investment in our country's history. It is a $1.1 million investment. There is no question about that.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service is proud to have a bilingual and diverse workforce, and it will continue to serve Canadians.

Official Languages February 18th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank the member for repeating messages that are important to all Canadians.

First and foremost, official communications of the government are always in French and English. The fact that our ministers take the time to also put out messages on personal accounts is exactly that: they can do it personally.

We encourage them, of course, to send out messages that have to do with official communications in French and English. However, these are personal Twitter accounts that we are talking about, and they are not subject to the Official Languages Act.

Official Languages February 17th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, as I have said many times, we take official languages and official language minority communities very seriously. That is why we have a roadmap with $1.1 billon in funding. This is a record investment made by our government.

We will continue to build on these efforts and to support our friends in Canada's francophone communities.

Official Languages February 17th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, what the opposition member just said is ridiculous. The government routinely communicates in both official languages.

The member is talking about Twitter accounts. However, those are the members' personal accounts.

We take our country's two official languages very seriously.

CBC/Radio-Canada February 16th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I will repeat what I said in English. The member knows very well that we provide the CBC with over a billion dollars every year. We expect that it will honour its mandate under the Broadcasting Act to provide quality programming in French and English to Canadians.

I find it strangely odd that the NDP would suggest that we actually take money away from taxpayers, as we provide a universal child care benefit, to give to an organization that gets over a billion dollars a year. That is what I call irresponsible and we will not be going down that road.

CBC/Radio-Canada February 16th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, despite the member's little jokes, the truth is that the government is already giving CBC/Radio-Canada over a billion dollars a year.

I have already indicated a number of times what we expect from CBC/Radio-Canada, and that is that it promote programs that Canadians want to watch and listen to in English and in French. That is why it receives a billion dollars a year.

Canadian Heritage February 4th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, please allow me to thank the member for his devotion to this very important event.

The 50th anniversary of the national flag of Canada will be celebrated across the country. We will have flag-raising ceremonies in schools in municipalities across the country. The Royal Canadian Mint will be introducing a collectible coin and Canada Post will be introducing special stamps.

We have also partnered with great organizations, like the Girl Guides of Canada, Scouts Canada and the Royal Canadian Legion, to promote this milestone to thousands of Canadians. There is a CFL partnership coming. There is more to come.

I hope everyone will celebrate the flag and celebrate who we are as Canadians.

Canadian Heritage January 28th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, Canada's history is one of risk, sacrifice and determination. Canadians have triumphed over all manner of adversity to build a strong, proud and free country.

As we approach our 150th anniversary in 2017, our Conservative government will join Canadians in celebrating this important historic moment, and Quebec City will be part of that.

CBC/Radio-Canada December 4th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, what is shameful is to see an MP lose control like that in front of Canadians across the country.

With regard to the CBC, once again, the CRTC is responsible for ensuring that the public broadcaster fulfills its mandate. We are going to let the CRTC do its job.
